10.f. “I will fix my eyes upon them for evil and not for good.”

Amos 9:1  I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said: “Strike the capitals until the thresholds shake, and shatter them on the heads of all the people; and those who are left of them I will kill with the sword; not one of them shall flee away; not one of them shall escape.  “If they dig into Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; if they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down. If they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, from there I will search them out and take them; and if they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them. And if they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them; and I will fix my eyes upon them for evil and not for good.”

Deuteronomy 28:15    But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God… And it shall be, that just as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good and multiply you, so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you and bring you to nothing; and you shall be plucked from off the land which you go to possess.

Leviticus 26:23     And if by these things you are not reformed by Me, but walk contrary to Me, then I also will walk contrary to you, and I will punish you yet seven times for your sins. And I will bring a sword against you that will execute the vengeance of the covenant.

This was God’s way of telling Israel that they could run, but they could not hide from Him and His judgment. Even if they tried to dig into hell or climb up to heaven, they could not escape their responsibility before God. A high mountain (Carmel) or the bottom of the sea could not hide them from judgment.  I will set My eyes on them for harm and not for good: An essential part of the Old Covenant was the promise of blessing or cursing based on Israel’s obedience. If Israel was in chronic, systemic disobedience, they could expect that God’s eye toward them would be for harm and not for good.

How much better is it to live under the blessings of God?  Who would choose to take harm over good, and yet we do this every day we choose to walk paths disobedient to what it means to honor, glorify, follow, trust, and obey Jesus Christ.  Walking each day with Jesus Christ is an intentional choice to deny self and live for Him. Life has a way of capturing our focus and it does it very subtly.  Soon we find ourselves adopting things into our lives that are not honoring Jesus Christ or to our benefit.  Keep a deep hunger and thirst for not only honoring Him but for growing in wisdom and understanding of His Word>

d.e. ” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace”

1Corinthians 15:19  If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

Hebrews 11:1  “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction evidence of things not seen.”

Romans 15:13  May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

We often talk about hope in a type of wishful sense: “I hope you have a nice day.” “Hope you have a relaxing vacation.” “I hope I get the job.” “I hope she says yes.” “I hope I get the promotion.” “I hope I don’t get sick.” There are many things we hope for in this life, some more probable to happen than others. However, the biblical concept of hope goes far beyond these earthly hopes. It is not mere wishful thinking, but something we have confidence will happen.

The Christian’s hope is grounded in the belief that there is more to life than what we can wish for in this world. The Christian hope is based on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and in God’s promise to resurrect all who believe in Jesus. It is the hope of forgiveness of sins. It is the hope of a heavenly home. It is the hope of a glorified body in which to live and the hope of a new earth on which to live. Most importantly, it is the hope to live in these new glorified bodies on a new earth in the very presence of God Himself for all eternity—eternal life and joy in the presence of God. This is the hope of all true believers.  This Christian hope is not wishful thinking. We have been given promises by God Himself that Jesus Christ, whom He raised from the dead, will return again. We have been promised by God Himself that when Jesus returns, we who believe will be transformed into the perfect image and likeness of His Son.  We have been promised that we who believe will be forgiven our sins because of the death of Christ and will inherit eternal life because of the righteousness and resurrection of Christ.  The resurrection is no myth. It was a historical event witnessed by hundreds of people. Jesus Christ rose from the dead and appeared to His disciples and at least 500 other people.  After forty days, Jesus ascended to heaven where He reigns at God’s right hand. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. In this we hope, and we have good reason to hope, for God has said it will be and God accomplishes everything He says. He has done so throughout history and will continue to do so in the future.

As further assurance, God has given His Holy Spirit to believers in Christ. The Holy Spirit testifies to our hearts, minds, and spirits that the promises of God are true. The Holy Spirit confirms the truth of God’s promises to us and assures us by His very presence in us that we belong to Christ. The Spirit confirms our adoption into God’s family and therefore assures us that our hoped-for inheritance is certain. In fact, the Holy Spirit is God’s pledge to us.

The Bible has much to say about hope, but this is what it says about our greatest hope. The ultimate Christian hope is that one day Christ will return and we who are looking forward to that return will go to be with Him forever. Because of Christ, we will triumph over sin, guilt, death, and hell itself. We will inherit eternal life to be enjoyed in the presence of our most loving and gracious God. We will even receive rewards for what we have done for Christ and we will reign with Him in a new world—a perfect world of love and righteousness. In this we hope and because God has promised it we know it will certainly happen. All God’s promises find their fulfillment in Christ, our Lord and Savior. He is our hope!

10.d. Well Ordered

Psalm 37:23 The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand. I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread. He is ever lending generously, and his children become a blessing. Turn away from evil and do good; so shall you dwell forever. For the LORD loves justice; he will not forsake his saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.

Divine coincidence is an economic theory referring “to the property of New Keynesian models that there is no trade-off between the stabilization of inflation and of the welfare-relevant output gap … for central banks.” Don’t worry if you don’t understand that; economists don’t either!

Nor can we talk about “divine coincidence” in a biblical sense. The word coincidence implies randomness and chance. But there are no coincidences for God’s children.

Instead, let’s talk about divine ordering. God personally orders and arranges our steps. Nothing happens to us by accident. Even adverse incidents become part of His long-term strategy for our good. The God of the universe is keenly involved in our lives.

According to 2 Chronicles 8:16, Solomon built the temple of the Lord according to a master blueprint: “Now all the work of Solomon was well-ordered from the day of the foundation of the house of the Lord until it was finished.”

You are God’s temple, and His blueprint for your life leaves nothing to chance.

How comprehensive is the love of Jesus! There is no part of His people’s interests which He does not consider, and there is nothing which concerns their welfare which is not important to Him.

10.c. “Not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.”

Amos 8:11  “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it.

1 Samuel 3:1    Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD in the presence of Eli. And the word of the LORD was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.

Ezekiel 7:26    Disaster comes upon disaster; rumor follows rumor. They seek a vision from the prophet, while the law perishes from the priest and counsel from the elders.

Romans 11:7-10    What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened,  as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.”

Isaiah 30:20-21    And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself anymore, but your eyes shall see your Teacher.  And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.

2 Timothy 3:7     always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.

“Behold, the days are coming”.  Amos proclaimed a day when there would be a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.  A day when the people were hardened.  A day when the Teacher does not hide and ears will hear Him speak to their heart, mind, and soul.  They will hear “this is the way, walk in it”.  Don’t you wonder if people will listen  and walk in it?  Or will they harden against it?  “And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity and water of affliction” they will either listen or not.

I am sooooo tired of hearing people blaming China, the President, governors, mayors, and anyone else for the current pandemic.  As if they could do anything to stop the spread of this.  If we do not see God sovereign over this bread of adversity and water of affliction then I guess you end up looking for someone to blame.  Could God be speaking to the world one last time before the end of days.  Could He be graciously reaching out through this to call the hearts, minds, and soul of man to Himself.  How long will He wait?  I wonder how many during this time will reject His calling out.  I wonder for how many this will be their last chance to hear His calling.  We never know when our last day is.  We never know the moment we will enter into eternity.  Life never gives us a heads up.  Hear today and all is good and then bam, eternity.  Know this there is no second chance apart from while we are alive on this side of eternity.  Sin must be recognized and owned or there will never be seen the need of Jesus Christ, redemption, forgiveness, salvation, and repentance.  As the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ perishes from a society, nation, and culture there will be no hope, peace, or rest for the people.  Come to Him, confess your sin, repent and turn away from it, and believe in the work Jesus Christ did on the cross to redeem you.  Follow, trust, and obey Him.  Eternity is nearer than you think.

10.a. “But the Lord took me from following the flock”

Amos 10:14  Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, “I was no prophet, nor a prophet’s son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. But the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ Now therefore hear the word of the Lord.

 Psalms 78:70-72  He chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds;  from following the nursing ewes he brought him to shepherd Jacob his people, Israel his inheritance.

 Matthew 4:18-19  While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.  And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

 Matthew 9:9  As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.

 1 Corinthians 1:27  But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;

Do you ever wonder what it is that God has called you to do?  Are you listening?  Are you wanting to hear Him and desiring to obey Him?  Amos, David, Samuel, Matthew, Peter, and Andrew are but a very few listed here.  They were humble.  They knew in there heart they were called to trust, follow, rely and obey.  I look back and know I have been placed in places and positions that were only by the hand of God and His leading.  I also know how many times I failed at being a good example, follower, and doing that which was honoring Him.  Paul put it best when he said “the things I ought to do I don’t, and the things I should not do I do”.  Such seems to be the battle we have in life with our sinful nature and humbly serving God.  These battles do not seem to go away.  After one is won or lost and a lesson is learned and our walk with Jesus Christ matures,  but God is always leading us deeper and deeper into knowing Him, trusting Him, and relying on Him.   He has called us into a life of knowing Him more and more.  He has called us to do special things once or the same things continuously.   As a follower we do well to keep our ears open and our hearts yearning for His leading. Remember you have been called to honor, follow, trust, and obey in whatever God has for you each day.  He has a purpose for your life.  Allow Him to use it for His honor and glory.

10. “Do you believe this?”

1 Corinthians 15:12–19,  “Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.”

1Timothy 4:10  For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

Ephesians 1:7  In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,  which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

 Joh 11:25  Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

The lyrics of this song capture hope, faith, trust, and reliance in Jesus Christ. In times likes these we need hope, faith, trust, and reliance.

My hope is built on nothing less, Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness, I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name, On Christ the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand

When darkness hides His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace, In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil, On Christ the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand

His oath, His covenant, His blood, Support me in the whelming flood, When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay, On Christ the solid Rock I stand, All other ground is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand

9.z. ““Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people “

Amos 7:7   This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them; the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.”

2 Samuel 8:2    And he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. And the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute.

2 Kings 21:13    And I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line of Samaria, and the plumb line of the house of Ahab, and I will wipe Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down.

Isaiah 28:17    And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter.”

Isaiah 34:11    But the hawk and the porcupine shall possess it, the owl and the raven shall dwell in it. He shall stretch the line of confusion over it, and the plumb line of emptiness.

If you have ever done any construction “plumb line” would mean something to you.  A plumb line is a weight suspended from a string used as a vertical reference line to ensure a structure is centered. As they always find the vertical axis pointing to the center of gravity, they ensure everything is right and centered. Of course, now we use lasers to do this but the end result is the same, finding the center between two vertical points.  David used a horizontal line to say who was to live and die amongst the Moabites. In Isaiah, we see a line of justice and a plumb line of righteousness.

This got me to thinking about what we use to ensure we are centered in relation to God’s righteousness.  How can we know?  The Word of God will and does center us.  The problem is I think we wait until we are way too far from the center before we seek center.  Too often we use the plumb line of worldly expectations and definitions of what centered means.  Health, wealth, prosperity, busyness, and ease of life seem to scream out this is what being centered means.  God says, seek and desire me with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul, and all your strength.  Love your neighbor, help the orphan and widow, and humbly serve honor, follow, obey, trust, and rely upon Me.  Our center is found in His Word when our hearts, minds, and ears are opened with a hunger and thirst for its leading in our lives.  To be centered with God requires an intentional surrender of self and an intentional choice to keep focused on Him alone.  Grab hold of the plumb line and never let go.  Keep centered. Rely on, cling too, and trust in Him alone.

9.y. “And tomorrow will be like this day, great beyond measure.”

Amos 6:1  “Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes! Pass over to Calneh, and see, and from there go to Hamath the great; then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory, O you who put far away the day of disaster and bring near the seat of violence? “Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches, and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall, who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp and like David invent for themselves instruments of music, who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils,

Isaiah 56:12    “Come,” they say, “let me get wine; let us fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow will be like this day, great beyond measure.”

  Ezekiel 12:22  “Son of man, what is this proverb that you have about the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days grow long, and every vision comes to nothing’?

1 Thessalonians 5:3   While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

2 Peter 3:4  They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”

Before Covid 19 how many would have been saying “and tomorrow will be like this day, great beyond measure.” Do you ever stop to think about all of those who have rejected God’s call to repentance?  I sometimes wonder what it is that keeps them from seeing and hearing what the Word of God calls out.  “COME UNTO ME ALL WHO ARE HEAVEY WITH BURDENS AND I WILL GIVE YOU REST”, “FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHALL NOT PERISH BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE”, “I WILL RETURN AGAIN”, “WHERE I AM YOU SHALL BE ALSO”…. these Words of God call out great promises of salvation, redemption, hope, peace, rest, and eternity.  Likewise, there are plenty of scripture that have great promises of wrath, anger, and judgment.  It is one or the other.  There is no middle ground.  Belief in Jesus Christ, repenting of sin, trusting in, clinging to, and relying on Jesus Christ, growing in understanding, knowledge, and wisdom through God’s Word, and seeking and desiring to humbly serve honor, and obey Him is the choice of those who will be in eternity with Him.  Others will not.  Because of their rejection of Jesus Christ, they will spend eternity in torment forever and ever.  Know that we will be held accountable for how we live and just like in times of Amos, people would not believe judgment was at their doorstep.

9.x. “For we have made lies our refuge”

Amos 5:18   Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness, and not light, as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him. Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it?

Isaiah 28:15-22     Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement, when the overwhelming whip passes through it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter”;

Malachi 4:1     “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.

There is a time for all men to be aware of the Day of the Lord.  A dark time will come and expose all the lies we have made into a false sense of refuge.  Prosperity and ease of life seem to draw us away into these lies and further away from God.  What will it take for us to recognize the absolute need to honor and glorify God in all that we think, say and do?  How many days go by where our desire to satisfy self is put in higher regard than honoring and glorifying God?  Far too many, I think.  We get sucked into the vortex of the busyness of life and before we know it God is but a distant thought.  We do have time now.  Time to set aside self and to start learning what it means to humbly serve and honor and glorify God.  We have time right now to intentionally choose to set aside time for growing and seeking God in new and mature ways.  We have time to reflect on both sin and forgiveness, weakness and power, fear and courage, and eternity.  We have time to spend in His Word.  Turn back to Him and determine to stay close.  Determine to listen for His Spirit to guide you.  And above all give honor and glory to Him.  He is worthy of all honor, glory, and praise.
