15.p. “I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.”

John 5:30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.

John 14:10    Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

John 8:42     Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.

John 8:28     So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.

Psalms 40:7-8    Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:  I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

John 4:34     Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

Psalms 96:13    before the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Isaiah 11:3-4    And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,  but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

Romans 2:5    But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

Jesus explained that He is qualified as a completely righteous judge because His power is in submission too and to do the will of God the Father. How much of our day(s) do we do our will without a single thought too doing the will of God? I am certain there are those who believe there is God or a god but give no thought to having a personal relationship with Him. There are fewer who believe Jesus Christ was the Son of God and even of these there are many who give no thought to having a personal relationship with Him. If we are to come to the Father we must come through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Here is the difference between these and those who have had a personal relationship with the Son and the Father. Those who believe trust in, cling too and rely on Jesus Christ. They are aware of sin, their sin, and the Holiness of the Son, Jesus Christ, and the Father, God. In this awareness, they seek to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. In this awareness, they have an understanding that has been given to them by and through Jesus Christ. In this awareness, they have intentionally chosen to seek this relationship and believed the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In this awareness, they have sought forgiveness, repented of their sin, and believed in salvation and redemption through Jesus Christ. There is more than just head knowledge. The difference is that they personally know Jesus Christ rather than knowledge of Him. They have made an intentional choice to surrender, serve, listen, follow, yield, trust, obey, honor, and glorify Jesus Christ. They do not seek their own will but continually seek to do the will of Jesus Christ every day. They do not seek to honor themselves.

Judgment is coming and the wrath of God is being stored up against all who reject Jesus Christ. Today we are closer to this coming judgment than before. The warning has been given that this judgment is coming. The warning has been given that all who reject Jesus Christ will go to hell and be tormented forever and ever in eternity. It is out of love that God sends these warnings. “For God so loved the world that He sent His only Son, that whosoever believe in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” “not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” “But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.”

Knowing of Jesus Christ will never result in repentance or trust. Knowing Jesus Christ will. Behold, He stands at the door of your heart, knocking. Open that door and allow Him in.

15.o. “Do not marvel at this”

John 5:25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Ephesians 2:1     And you were dead in the trespasses and sins

Ephesians 2:5    even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved

Revelation 3:1   “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. “‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

Jesus had already explained that one who lives can hear His word, believe, and have everlasting life. Now He adds that one day even the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and be raised again. He said do not be astonished or surprised by what I am telling you. While we are breathing and have the appearance of life we can still be dead spiritually. When a person understands this they will make a choice to believe in or deny Jesus Christ. To believe (clings too, relies on, and trusts) in Him they are born again and alive in Christ. They rely on the words of Christ. They understand they are separated from this new life because of their sin, no matter how good they outwardly appear to live. They understand the need for redemption. They understand the need for forgiveness. They understand the need to repent and turn away from their old life. The Holy Spirit indwells them in this new life to guide, lead, instruct, and encourage them in the grace, love, mercy, will, purposes, and glory of God the Father through Jesus Christ.

When a person does not understand how they are spiritually dead, even though they are still breathing, they will make a choice to deny Jesus Christ. Though they have the appearance of being alive they are dead. They choose to deny their sin, the glory and power of God, and the need for redemption through Jesus Christ. It is in this denial they are dead while they live.

Jesus also says that a time is coming when those who are in the grave will hear his voice and be reunited with their spirit. This resurrection with the spirit and body will happen with all who have ever been alive. Some to the resurrection of life and some to the resurrection of judgment. Those who trust and believe in Jesus Christ may experience a physical death of the flesh but they will be resurrected alive to be with Christ forevermore throughout eternity. Those who deny Jesus Christ will experience a physical death of the flesh and will be resurrected to judgment, torment, and separation from God for eternity. This is the second death. This death is not an end, but it is an eternal death where there is total awareness of judgment, torment, and separation from God for eternity. We may experience a peaceful or traumatic physical death but this sting of physical death is nothing compared to the second death of those who choose to deny Jesus Christ.

Oh that the mystery of this would be made aware in full understanding in our hearts, minds, and souls.

15.n. “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

John 5:19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

Mark 16:16    Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Romans 10:13    For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

1 John 5:11-13   And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.  I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.

Death is the country where every Christless soul lives. The man who knows not God lives a dying life or a living death, but he who believes in the Son of God passes over from the empire of death to the empire of life.” (Clarke) I recently heard of a person saying “Pro-choice” (abortion) is a God-given right. He has given us the freedom to choose and that makes it ok to be “Pro-choice.” Part of this is true – God does give us free will to choose. The free will choice to believe or not to believe. The free will choice to right rather than wrong. The free will choice to speak the truth or lies. The free will choice to give generously or take greedily. The free will choice to love or hate. The free will choice to hope or fear. The free will choice to believe in Jesus Christ or not. Our free-will choices throughout life have consequences on this side of the grave. But there is one free will choice that will have eternal consequences. When the free-will choice is made to deny and reject Jesus Christ the consequence is eternal torment forever and ever. God gave us free-will to choose belief in Jesus Christ. Essentially, will you use this free will to choose eternity in heave through Jesus Christ or eternity in hell with Satan and the multitudes of other people who have made and died in their free will choice?

15.m. “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.”

John 5:10 Now that day was the Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

Isaiah 58:13 “If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly;

Luke 13:14 But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, “There are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”

Carrying a bed (actually a sleeping-mat or a bedroll) was in fact a violation of the rabbis’ interpretation of the commandment against doing work or business on the Sabbath. It was not a breaking of God’s law of the Sabbath, but the human interpretation of God’s law. “Jesus persistently maintained that it is lawful on the sabbath to do good. He ignored the mass of scribal regulations, and thus inevitably came into conflict with the authorities.” Doesn’t it seem a bit strange that the Rabbi’s wanted to know who told the crippled man to carry his bed-mat rather than who had healed him? To the healed man, Jesus would have been seen as a miracle worker and healer. To the Jewish leaders, a Sabbath Lawbreaker.

It is important to note that when Jesus found the healed cripple in the temple He said “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.” What could be worse than 38 years being crippled? What was Jesus referring too? A person who goes on knowingly sinning and rejecting God’s warning will experience the wrath and anger of God. Hell is a place of eternal darkness and torment of the soul. It is a place from which there is no return and no relief for eternity. The road to hell is very wide and it is lined with all sorts of excuses for the reason a person is living, acting, thinking, and talking. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth will speak and actions will be taken. When there is rejection neglect of God’s Word in your heart, mind, and soul, something else from this world will surely fill it. This filling will seem to satisfy but in the end, it will rob you of eternity in heaven. Our lives ought to be Jesus-honoring reflections of continued growth in faith, love, mercy, hope, and grace. Do not fill your heart with what this world has to offer. Seek and desire God’s Word with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and purpose to honor, glorify, worship, follow, trust, and obey Him now and for eternity.

15.l. From Pathway to Victory devotional

Is it possible to live above our circumstances and experience true joy despite the struggles we face? The apostle Paul would say yes! In his letter to the Philippian Christians, Paul shared how to maintain outrageous joy despite difficult circumstances.

First of all, Paul maintained his joy by having gratitude for God’s blessings. In Philippians 1:3, Paul said, “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you.” Notice that word “remembrance,” because it’s key to understanding what Paul was saying. There is a direct relationship between how we think and how we feel. And one of the most powerful ways to maintain joy is to change your thinking. Proverbs 23:7 says, “As [a person] thinks within himself, so he is.” The first principle for maintaining your joy despite difficult circumstances is to change what you’re thinking about.

Remember, Paul was writing this letter from prison, facing his possible execution. He could’ve chosen to think about how tight the chains were or how bad the prison food was. But look at what Paul said instead: “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now” (Philippians 1:3-5).

Paul was saying, in essence, “I’m not thinking about my circumstances right now. Instead, my dear Philippians, I’m remembering you, the people I love so much.” He was thinking about Lydia, whom he led to Christ (Acts 16:14). He was thinking of the demon-possessed girl in whose life God did a miracle (Acts 16:18). He was thinking about the Philippian jailer and his whole family (Acts 16:31-34). He was thinking about all the Philippian Christians who had written him letters of encouragement over the years and who sent him a generous financial gift. That’s how he maintained his joy.

May I share with you a secret? It is impossible to be depressed and grateful at the same time. You simply can’t do it. Years ago, I was feeling particularly low on a Monday morning, so I started thanking God for everything He’s done for me. I thanked Him for my wife and our daughters. For the wonderful church, He has allowed me to serve. For the great ministry opportunities, He has given me. For my health and the many blessings in my life. And as I kept expressing gratefulness to God for all these blessings, my depression evaporated. You see, a key to maintaining joy and living above your circumstances is to be overcome with gratitude. That’s why Paul had joy: he had learned the first principle of maintaining joy despite difficult circumstances–a gratitude for God’s blessings.

15.k. “Do you want to be healed?”

John 5:1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

The crippled man assumed Jesus knew how things worked at the Pool of Bethesda, and he explained to Jesus why it wasn’t possible for him to be healed. Quite naturally, the man couldn’t think of any other way for his need to be met. The man was an interesting case of hope combined with hopelessness. He had hope, or would never have come to the Pool of Bethesda. Yet once there, he had little hope to be the favored one to win the healing that day. “The invalid man does what we nearly all do. He limits God’s help to his own ideas and does not dare promise himself more that he conceives in his mind.” Jesus told the man to do what he could not do. Jesus challenged the man to believe Him for the impossible. It’s easy to imagine that the man’s first reaction was, I can’t do that – why even try? Yet something wonderful prompted the man to say, If this man tells me to do it, I will try. Jesus guided the man towards a response of faith. Do you notice that the invalid did not ask any question of Jesus? He did not say, “how am I supposed to get up and walk?” He just did what Jesus told him to do, he got up and walked. He believed in Jesus who spoke the words to him. Jesus did not touch him. It was by His word the man was healed.

There is no limit to the power of Jesus Christ. In all things, He is mightier than whatever it is we are facing. In all things Jesus is supreme. At His word all creation took place. At His word nations were defeated, lions tamed, seas calmed, the sick healed, and the dead brought back to life. It is faith in Him that we will find peace for today and hope for tomorrow.

15.j.“Go; your son will live.”

John 4:46 So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” The official said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” And he himself believed, and all his household. This was now the second sign that Jesus did when he had come from Judea to Galilee.

Signs and wonders can lead a person towards belief in God, and can validate a heavenly messenger – but they can also have no effect on a person. Signs and wonders from God are obviously good things, but they should not form the foundation of our faith. We should not depend on them to prove God to us. In themselves, signs and wonders cannot change the heart; Israel saw incredible signs at Mount Sinai and even heard the very voice of God, yet a short time later they worshipped a gold calf. We can see true faith in this official. He did not seek a sign to believe. He believed in Jesus’s word. “Go, your son will live”. The father begged at mercy’s door for the life of his son and believed what Jesus told him. The man said, “Come and save my son”. It is as if the father believed Jesus could heal his son if his son was in the presence of Jesus’s touch. Jesus pointed out to this man that there was a serious issue with his faith. I am sure the father did not expect to hear a rebuke, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.” But, after this, the father believed his son was healed at the moment Jesus said, “Go, your son lives”. He had faith to trust in the healing. This belief in healing at the word of Jesus grew. It grew from, “my son will be healed because Jesus said so”, to “Jesus is the Messiah, Christ, Son of God.” When our belief in Jesus Christ awakens our hearts, minds, and souls, we are transformed deep within. If only we would continue to grow in faith then we might say like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, “our God can save us, but even if He doesn’t, we will not bow down and worship your idol.” When our faith grows we come to a place where we have faith to believe but allow the purpose and plans of God to dictate the outcome without hindering our faith.
