34.i. “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

Matthew 24:32  “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Christ foretells his second coming. It is usual for prophets to speak of things as near and just at hand, to express the greatness and certainty of them. Concerning Christ’s second coming, it is foretold that there shall be a great change, in order to the making all things new. Then they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds. At his first coming, he was set for a sign that should be spoken against, but at his second coming, a sign that should be admired. Sooner or later, all sinners will be mourners; but repenting sinners look to Christ in with expectant joy. Men of the world scheme and plan for generation upon generation here, but they plan not with reference to the overwhelming, approaching, and most certain event of Christ’s second coming, which shall do away every human scheme, and set aside for ever all that God forbids. Christ here shows the state of the old world when the deluge came. They were secure and careless, and they believed not, cared not, lived not, obeyed not, and they knew not, until the flood came. (Henry)

This day is not further off because of people not giving it any thought No, in fact, it is closer today than ever before yet it seems the longer it is delayed the more people’s hearts are secure in the way things are. They give no thought to it or the coming judgment when Christ returns.  I have heard a Christian person say I don’t think hell is a real judgment of eternal torment and pastors should not preach on it. Scaring people into belief is not right, they said.  I am not sure how you can understand the grace, mercy, and love God demonstrated toward sinners if eternal hell is not understood of what we deserve in light of His holiness, and as well, understand the need for repentance, forgiveness, and salvation.

To discard His second coming, or at the very least, not give it a passing thought is to allow ourselves to be captivated by things of this world that would draw us away from and expectant longing of His soon return.
