37.g. “While he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac”

 

 

Genesis 25:1  Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. Abraham gave all he had to Isaac. But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country.

These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, 175 years. Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre, the field that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife. After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac his son. And Isaac settled at Beer-lahai-roi.

Below are thoughts of this chapter in commentaries by various men of God. I have copied three of these to show how they varied in their views  on this chapter. The last on, Henry, seemed to regard it best to me as the others try to explain why Abraham did or did not father these six sons before or after Sarah’s death.

Abraham’s Marriage to Keturah is generally supposed to have taken place after Sarah’s death, and his power to beget six sons at so advanced an age is attributed to the fact, that the Almighty had endowed him with new vital and reproductive energy for begetting the son of the promise. But there is no firm ground for this assumption; as it is not stated anywhere, that Abraham did not take Keturah as his wife till after Sarah’s death. It is merely an inference drawn from the fact, that it is not mentioned till afterwards; and it is taken for granted that the history is written in strictly chronological order. (Keil and Delitzsch)

Five and thirty years Abraham lived after the marriage of Isaac, and all that is recorded concerning him during that time lies here in a very few verses; we hear no more of God’s extraordinary appearances to him or trials of him; for all the days even of the greatest saints are not eminent; some slide on silently; such were these last days of Abraham. We have here an account of his children by Keturah, another wife, whom he married after the death of Sarah. He had buried Sarah, and married Isaac, the two dear companions of his life, and was now solitary; his family wanted a governess, and it was not good for him to be thus alone; he therefore marries again. By Keturah he had six sons, in whom the promise made to Abraham, concerning the great increase of his posterity, was in part fulfilled. The strength he received by the promise still remained in him, to show how much the virtue of the promise exceeds the power of nature. (Benson)

All the days, even of the best and greatest saints, are not remarkable days; some slide on silently; such were these last days of Abraham. Here is an account of Abraham’s children by Keturah, and the disposition which he made of his estate. After the birth of these sons, he set his house in order, with prudence and justice. He did this while he yet lived. It is wisdom for men to do what they find to do while they live, as far as they can. Abraham lived 175 years; just one hundred years after he came to Canaan; so long he was a sojourner in a strange country. Whether our stay in this life be long or short, it matters but little, provided we leave behind us a testimony to the faithfulness and goodness of the Lord, and a good example to our families. We are told that his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him. It seems that Abraham had himself brought them together while he lived. Let us not close the history of the life of Abraham without blessing God for such a testimony of the triumph of faith. (Henry)

37.f. “Discernment”

 

1 Kings 3:9  Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?

“The death of President Franklin Roosevelt abruptly thrust Harry Truman into the presidency. He traveled to Capitol Hill to address Congress, and at the end of his speech he said: “As I have assumed my heavy duties, I humbly pray Almighty God, in the words of King Solomon: ‘Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad; for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?’ I ask only to be a good and faithful servant of my Lord and my people.” That’s not just a prayer for kings like Solomon or presidents like Truman. It’s a prayer each of us can make our own. James 1:5 tells us to ask God for wisdom. We’re living in days that call for insight, for the lines between good and evil are blurred. Let’s learn to ask God for constant wisdom in our ongoing decisions, and let’s depend on Him to give us daily discernment and wise judgment.”  (Dr. Jeremiah)

We all need discernment, but how often do we ask for it?  We may ask for it for a significant purchase, the right Dr., a new job, how to handle a situation, understanding scripture, etc…. but how many days go by where we lean unto our own understanding? Cultures, neighbors, family, and friends, who do not know God, spend no or limited time in God’s Word make decisions, have opinions, and make judgments based on their own wisdom and understanding. We are foolish to think these do not influence us and our thinking and how we speak, and how we act. Many laws are made and rulings mandated by people in authority who have only worldly discernment.  “The blind leading the blind”.

News media outlets proclaim what they discern as worthy news and carry on and on with their opinions about it. People post on social media sites what they discern as worthy thoughts for others to read. News hosts and people void of God’s Word and influence in their lives – gossip, tell lies, embellish, spread rumors, boast, and reject any notion that God will judge for all of these down to the thoughts that produced the words and actions. When we are complacent in studying God’s Word and neglect asking for discernment daily we will be influenced by something worldly or of the flesh.

It is not hard to see. Pornography is called adult entertainment. LBGQT is called an alternative lifestyle. Abortion is called a women’s rights or women’s choice. Greed is called being a shrewd businessman. Hate is called righteous anger. Honesty has been replaced by ratings and sensationalism. The Bible is called a fairytale made up by man. Jesus Christ was just a good man. There is no God. There is no judgment now or coming in the future. There is no heaven or hell. There is no return of Jesus Christ coming soon. Lies are called truth. Truths are called lies. It is all around us all of the time and if we are not diligent in our study of God’s Word with a desire to honor and glorify Jesus Christ in all we think, say, and do we too will easily be swayed little by little by the things of this world and what it deems right and wrong.

Dawn and I both spend time in God’s Word each day. We stopped watching the news years ago. It is amazing how your thinking changes when you are not being influenced by their opinions and thoughts. There is a new term that surfaced 6 years ago – Fake News.  I doubt that it just started to turn fake but rather it has been sliding fast into this state and someone had called it what it was. Someone has said, “not reading the news leaves a person uninformed, reading the news leaves them misinformed”. Both are true for news outlets and social media posts.  Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a filter on TVs and Social Media outlets that would flash, “Embellished”, “Lie”, “False”, or “True”. The Word of God and the indwelling Holy Spirit are more than able to give discernment to the hearts and minds of those desiring it for the honor and glory of Jesus Christ. It is sad to think that people of God actually spend more time listening to news outlets or reading social media posts than they do reading, studying, and meditating on God’s Word and seeking discernment for each day.

Each day will have its fill of worldly and fleshly ideas, thoughts, and actions and we do well to be able to discern between it and things of God. How we think, speak, and our actions are determined by what our heart is filled with.  Let it be filled with the Word of God and a desire to honor and glorify Jesus Christ in all we think, say, and do.

37.e. ” I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds”

 

 

Genesis 24:62  Now Isaac had returned from Beer-lahai-roi and was dwelling in the Negeb. And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there were camels coming. And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel and said to the servant, “Who is that man, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

 Joshua 1:8    This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

 Psalms 1:2     but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.

 Psalms 77:11-12    I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.  I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.

 Psalms 104:34   May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the LORD.

 Psalms 119:15     I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.

 Psalms 139:17    How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!

 Psalms 143:5  I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands.

To meditate;  think, pray, remember, reflect, weigh, ponder, consider, deliberate, be in a thoughtful state – think deeply or focus one’s mind for a period of time, in silence – to think deeply or carefully about (something).  Isaac went out into the field away from what might distract him to meditate, on what we are not told. Was it about the loss of his mother, the servants mission for a wife for him, God’s supplying a sacrifice, what his father Abraham had told him about God and God’s promises, God’s creation, etc….. we do not know. He went to the field to meditate away from that which should distract him. There were no city lights dimming the ability to see the stars, sounds of cars and trucks on nearby roads, no city night sounds – he set himself in a place without distraction so he could meditate.  

We, very seldom, can get away from distractions. Children, spouse, lights, noise, phones, computers, TV, radio, neighbors, etc….. Most of the time our only time to meditate is when our head hits the pillow and we soon fall fast asleep. If we are honest many times our meditation is about worry, fear, anger, pride, greed, lust, confusion, projects, timelines, family, finances, sickness, etc…. Things of this world that overwhelm, consume, and distract us. Why is this? Why do we find it almost impossible to meditate on the things of God? Why is this concept so hard to grasp? It is the busyness of life and it consumes our hearts and minds. It distracts us from the things of God. Test me on this. See if this is not true. Shut off your computer, phone, or tablet, and for the next 10 minutes meditating on the things of God and His Word. 

Where did your mind want to wander too? Were there thoughts other than the things of God and His Word grabbing your attention? It is not impossible, it just takes training. To start;

  1. Try praising God and worshiping His greatness. 
  2. Try to picture His leading throughout the day.
  3. Give thanks for who He is, what He has given, and what He has promised.
  4. Thank Him for His Word
  5. Think about His Word
  6. Confess and repent
  7. Place your burdens in His hands
  8. Seek His discernment for your tomorrow
  9. Ask Him to lead you in all you say, think, and do so that Jesus Christ is honored and glorified

It is not so much about finding time, but rather making time for meditation on God and things of God.  I am not talking about a minute here or there throughout the day (though this should happen).  I am talking about time set aside and purposed for meditation on God and things of God. Whatever is prioritized will find the time.  Do me this favor. For one week (7 days straight) prioritize 10 minutes for meditating on God and things of God.  Do not do this in bed. Go to the basement, garage, bathroom, back deck, wherever, and set your mind to this.  I am more than confident that after 7 days you will find value, benefit, comfort, joy, faith, hope, and peace growing more and more each day.  It will be a time of refuge and refreshing for your soul.

37.d. “Then I bowed my head and worshiped the LORD and blessed the LORD”

 

 

Genesis 24:39  So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant. The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, camels and donkeys. And Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old, and to him he has given all that he has. My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell, but you shall go to my father’s house and to my clan and take a wife for my son.’ I said to my master, ‘Perhaps the woman will not follow me.’ But he said to me, ‘The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son from my clan and from my father’s house. Then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my clan. And if they will not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’

“I came today to the spring and said, O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, if now you are prospering the way that I go, behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let the virgin who comes out to draw water, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water from your jar to drink,” and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,” let her be the woman whom the LORD has appointed for my master’s son.’

“Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also. Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms. Then I bowed my head and worshiped the LORD and blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to take the daughter of my master’s kinsman for his son. Now then, if you are going to show steadfast love and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.”

Eliezer – Abraham’s servant, doing service to his master, humble, a witness of God’s hand in his affairs, first-hand witness of God answering prayer on his journey, and surely witnessing the fulfillment of the promises and past blessings of God to Abraham. I am encouraged by how this servant relays his purpose and message. 

  1. God has blessed my master Abraham
  2. What wealth Abraham has, has been given to him by God
  3. Abraham’s only son was born late in the life of Sarah – an implied act of God
  4. He was sent by his master
  5. He was given specific instructions
  6. He had concerns
  7. He speaks of Abraham’s faith in God by angels being sent before him to prosper his journey
  8. He told them of his prayer to the God of Abraham concerning specific actions at the well
  9. He told them how God fulfilled this prayer
  10. After this he requested an immediate decision as if to say, God’s hand is clearly in this and now you must decide if you will honor what has been said and give Rebekah to my master’s son as his wife? 

There are many times in our lives that we want time to think things over before making a decision. Many of these times we are seeking God’s direction and discernment over the information that we have. Time and time again God will give discernment to those who seek His guidance and are surrendered to His purpose with willing obedience. 

Then there are times like this where clear communication to the hand and working of God has been both given and, in part, witnessed. This is when waiting to make a decision adds no value. Nothing more can be said. I liken this to the point in your life when God has opened your ears, mind, and heart to His holiness, your sin, judgment (eternal life or death), and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  This is not the time to ask for time to think it over – nothing more can be said – accept it or reject it, the message is clear.

37.c. “I shall know that you have shown steadfast love”

 

Genesis 24:10  Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose and went to Mesopotamia to the city of Nahor. And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time when women go out to draw water. And he said, “O LORD, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show steadfast love to my master Abraham. Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. Let the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master.” Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her water jar on her shoulder. The young woman was very attractive in appearance, a maiden whom no man had known. She went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up. Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” She said, “Drink, my lord.” And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand and gave him a drink. When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.” So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water, and she drew for all his camels. The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the LORD had prospered his journey or not. When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel, and two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels, and said, “Please tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?” She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” She added, “We have plenty of both straw and fodder, and room to spend the night.” The man bowed his head and worshiped the LORD and said, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast love and his faithfulness toward my master. As for me, the LORD has led me in the way to the house of my master’s kinsmen.”

Generally speaking, circumstances alone can be a dangerous way to discern God’s will. We have a way of ignoring circumstances that speak against our desired outcome (or we attribute those circumstances to the devil), while focusing on the circumstances that speak for our desired outcome. This is sometimes a bad way to discern God’s will. But in this case, Eliezer established what he would look for before anything happened. He wasn’t making up the standard as the process unfolded. Abraham’s servant asked God to show him the woman chosen to be Isaac’s wife through an offer to provide water for his ten camels. Eliezer was wise enough to ask for a sign that was remarkable, but (in human terms) possible. He didn’t tempt God by asking for fire to fall from heaven or for protection as he leapt from an unsafe height. Abraham’s servant cared nothing about the woman’s appearance. He wanted a woman of character, a woman whom God had chosen. (Guzik)

 Isaiah 65:24 speaks of this kind of gracious answer to prayer: It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear.

We have leave to be particular in recommending our affairs to the care of Divine providence. He proposes a sign, not that he intended to proceed no further, if not gratified in it; but it is a prayer that God would provide a good wife for his young master; and that was a good prayer. She should be simple, industrious, humble, cheerful, serviceable, and hospitable. Whatever may be the fashion, common sense, as well as piety, tells us, these are the proper qualifications for a wife and mother; for one who is to be a companion to her husband, the manager of domestic concerns, and trusted to form the minds of children. When the steward came to seek a wife for his master, he did not go to places of amusement and sinful pleasure, and pray that he might meet one there, but to the well of water, expecting to find one there employed aright. He prayed that God would please to make his way in this matter plain and clear before him. Our times are in God’s hand; not only events themselves, but the times of them. We must take heed of being over-bold in urging what God should do, lest the event should weaken our faith, rather than strengthen it. But God owned him by making his way clear. Rebekah, in all respects, answered the characters he sought for in the woman that was to be his master’s wife. When she came to the well, she went down and filled her pitcher, and came up to go home with it. She did not stand to gaze upon the strange man his camels, but minded her business, and would not have been diverted from it but by an opportunity of doing good. She did not curiously or confidently enter into discourse with him, but answered him modestly. On learning that she was of his master’s relations, he bowed down his head and worshipped, blessing God. (Henry)

Given all of the examples of prayer and the mighty works of God answering those prayers of faith in the bible, why is it we lack in prayer and faith?

Note the faithful servant prayed for God’s providence in providing success to him fulfilling Abraham’s assignment to him and showing His steadfast love to Abraham. This is not a prayer for success of self but for another.  Likewise the prayer of thanksgiving and worship of God in the answering of his prayer for Abraham’s quest for a wife for Isaac.

37.b. “Behold, I send an angel before you”

 

 

Genesis 24:5  The servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?” Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my son back there. The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, To your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there.”

 Exodus 23:20-23     “Behold, I send an angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared.  Pay careful attention to him and obey his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, for my name is in him.  “But if you carefully obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. “When my angel goes before you and brings you to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, and I blot them out,

 Psalms 32:8   I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

 Psalms 34:7     The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

 Proverbs 3:5-6   Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Abraham seeks to honor God by providing his son with a wife that will not lead him down paths away from God and God’s promises. Abraham’s faith in God’s ability to supply a wife, guide his servant, and fulfill this desire for his son’s wife is easily understood from; “He will send an angel before you”.  How this would work out and the details along the way Abraham did not give thought.  He trusted that God would supply, period. There is a strong relationship between belief, obedience, faith, and hope. 

There is a way that may seem too hard or impossible for you to accomplish. Do not allow this to weaken you but to encourage you and your faith in the power and might of God. He certainly is able to do that which we cannot and much more that we cannot even imagine.
