Doers of the Word

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves”

Jas 1:19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Lay apart all filthiness – The word here rendered filthiness, occurs nowhere else in the New Testament, It means properly filth; and then is applied to evil conduct considered as disgusting or offensive. Sin may be contemplated as a wrong thing; as a violation of law; as evil in its nature and tendency, and therefore to be avoided; or it may be contemplated as disgusting, offensive, loathsome. The particular reference in these passages is to the reception of the truth; and the doctrine taught is, that a corrupt mind, a mind full of sensuality and wickedness, is not favorable to the reception of the truth. It is not fitted to see its beauty, to appreciate its value, to understand its just claims, or to welcome it to the soul. Purity of heart is the best preparation always for seeing the force of truth. Instead of blaming God under our trials, let us open our ears and hearts to learn what he teaches by them. And if men would govern their tongues, they must govern their passions. The worst thing we can bring to any dispute, is anger. Here is an exhortation to lay apart, and to cast off as a filthy garment, all sinful practices. This must reach to sins of thought and affection, as well as of speech and practice; to every thing corrupt and sinful. We must yield ourselves to the word of God, with humble and teachable minds. Being willing to hear of our faults, taking it not only patiently, but thankfully. It is the design of the word of God to make us wise to salvation; and those who propose any mean or low ends in attending upon it, dishonour the gospel, and disappoint their own souls. (Henry)

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness,…. All manner of filthiness, both of flesh and spirit; all pride, vanity, wrath, malice, and evil speaking, under hearing the word: the allusion seems to be to a boiling pot, which casts up scum and filth, which must be taken off: and such is the spirit of wrathful men; it throws up the filth of haughtiness and pride, of anger, wrath, and wickedness, which must be taken off, and laid aside; or the word will not be heard to any profit, or advantage: (Gill)

Paul tells us to take every thought captive and search it out in light of God’s Word. James is telling us essentially the same thing but in our words spoken and actions taken. If there is neglect of God’s Word in our minds, then what is it that we use to govern our thoughts before they become words or actions? How are we to know our thoughts are wrong and contrary to what would honor and glorify Jesus Christ if we neglect to fill our minds with the living water and bread of life found in God’s Word? What fills our thoughts will come out in words and actions. Jesus said, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”.

I have many friends who are well versed in daily news both in the US and abroad, sports players and team stats, and other nuggets of information found on the internet. There is nothing wrong with knowing or searching out this information, but when it consumes our thoughts at the expense of time for God’s Word then the outcome is that which does not honor and glorify Jesus Christ. God’s Word profits the soul of those who search it for understanding, wisdom, and purpose in life. Our purpose on this side of eternity is to honor and glorify Jesus Christ in all thoughts, words, and actions.

Does knowing the latest news or team scores or internet influencers change in any single way what you are going to do today or tomorrow? For the most part, it will not. It will, however, occupy your mind. It may make you happy, sad, angry, fearful, hateful, confused, worrisome, lazy, boastful, arrogant, proud, envious, jealous, etc…..

News outlets bring the news, or what they deem as news, (what you need to know and how you should think) -do it for their profit.

Internet influencers (what you need to know and how you should think) – do it for their profit.

God’s Word (what you need to know and how you should think) – is given for our profit, eternal life, joy, peace, comfort, refuge, hope, reliance, strength, wisdom, knowledge, understanding, etc…..

What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul? Time spent in God’s Word profits our souls and is never wasted. Can we say the same for the other stuff we allow into our minds?

James 1:26   If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.

Proverbs 14:14    The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways, and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways.

As much as anything, pride is self-focus. Pride doesn’t necessarily say, “I’m better than you are.” Pride simply says, “I’m more important than you are, so I deserve more of my own attention and love than you do.” It also stifles ministry in another way. Out of pride, people will refuse to receive help when someone else reaches out to help bear their burden. Instead, Biblical humility tells us, “I am no more important than you are. Let me care about your burdens and needs.” Or to say, “I need help”. It is important to understand that Paul wrote to every Christian when he said, “When he is nothing.” In the sense Paul uses the idea here, it isn’t that some Christians are something, and others are nothing, and the problem is that the nothings think they are one of the somethings. Instead, Paul writes with the same idea behind Philippians 2:3b-4: In lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. If I esteem you above me, and you esteem me above you, a marvelous thing happens: we have a community where everyone is looked up to, and no one is looked down on. (Guzik)

“The meaning is more general and should therefore be expressed thus, ‘Since all men are nothing, he who wishes to appear something and persuades himself that he is somebody, deceives himself.’” (Calvin)

There are few things more self-deceptive than pride. To be proud is to be blind – blind to the freely given favor and gifts of God, blind to our sin and depravity, blind to the good in others, and blind to the foolishness of self-centeredness.

We often get angry when someone deceives us. Yet we don’t take the danger of deceiving ourselves as seriously as we should. It is a serious and terrible thing to deceive yourself. “The misery of most men is, that their minds are as ill set as their eyes, neither of them look inwards.” (Trapp)

Instead of deceiving ourselves, we must take a careful and sober examination of our lives (what we say, think, and do, where and what we spend our time on, am I seeking and desiring to honor and glorify Jesus Christ.) The Bible speaks of a day when our works will be examined before the Lord. Strive to have your works reveal humble humility, obedience, reliance, faith, and trust in Jesus Christ and in love, bearing the burdens on to another.

James 1:22-25 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

Statements like: “Make me to know your ways”, “teach me your paths”, “Lead me in your truth”, “please show me now your ways”, “Teach me good judgment and knowledge”, “unite my heart to fear your name”, “Come, let us go”, and “I believe” are all choices men made because they had respect, reverence for God. They understood their sinful nature, the need for forgiveness, and the only way possible was for God to teach and lead them. Do you ever think about questions like these? Do they come to you early in the morning and when you go to bed? God promises blessing for those who listen but the point here is the person must first have the desire and want for God to teach and lead them. This desire and want is a choice each of us must make if we want to learn and be lead by God. How many days go by without even a second thought of Him yet alone humbly serving Him? With all readily available access to God’s word, how do we think we will not be held accountable for neglecting His word? Every day we make a choice to learn from and be led by Him or to go it alone.

What keeps us from being more than hearers of the word? Do we treat our commitment to being doers like New Years resolutions? People are trying to find something to give purpose (light) to their lives. We are to be the light, isn’t it a shame to let that light shine every day. Will we fail some days, absolutely. Each of our lives have to be more than a partial commitment (a light so dim that it has no effect in the darkness). Our desire must be to know, live, honor and glorify God continually.

Romans 2:13
For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.
