32.w. “Other seeds fell on good soil”

Matthew 13:1  That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.”

We would normally look at this scripture and say it is speaking to those who proclaim the Word of God and the results they will see in the unsaved people to whom they have proclaimed. I think there is another important application for the believer. In order for God’s Word to have meaning, application, and purpose in our lives our ground of hearts and minds must be prepared for seeding. If we neglect God’s Word there is no seeding. If we neglect God’s Word there is no watering of previously planted seed. How is there to be any growth or harvest when there is neglect? This would be like a farmer who plants no seed and wonder why there is no harvest. Sounds foolish, doesn’t it. But, this is exactly what happens when God’s Word is neglected. There is no growth, no meaning, no application, no purpose in our lives. Neglecting God’s Word is an intentional choice. Oh, we can come up with thousands of reasons and excuses but the fact remains – we choose to neglect it. This should not be. How are we to honor and glorify Jesus Christ in all we think, say, and do if our hearts and minds neglect the very seed of God’s Word. We do well to think hard about the soil of our hearts and minds.  Are they prepared and ready for the Seeds of God’s Word? If seeds of God’s Word are not planted there will be no holiness harvested in our life for the glory and honor of Jesus Christ. If there is no watering of the seeds of God’s Word in our life there will be no holiness harvest for the honor and glory of Jesus Christ. “He who has ears, let him hear”

Let God’s Word find “good soil” for which to plant and grow in your life.

32.v. “A sower went out to sow”

This scripture has much meaning and application. God’s Word, the Seed, proclaimed by a person will not always have a salvation result in its hearers. To some the Word of God passes them by for their heart is closed to things of God.  When they hear His Word it has no meaning, no application, and no purpose. Though the person may be standing right in front of the proclaimer of God’s Word it is as if nothing is heard for they are stone deaf to it.  We should not be shocked that this occurs no matter how eloquent and persuasive our speech for we were much like them until our ears were opened and our hearts softened to things of God. I have no idea how a person’s heart can be so stone-hard and their rejection of God’s Word so firm. The aspects of birds devouring, stony ground, and being choked out by thorns are pictures of how the Word of God has no effect or little to no effect or no lasting effect in the life of the hearer.

If no seed is planted how will anything ever grow? This is very clear and understandable. The results of growth after planting are surely not known at the time of planting. We must never look upon a person and make judgment on the type of soil their heart and mind.  Plant we must. God’s Word is powerful and is able to produce a bountiful harvest in the most unlikely of the hearts of people.

Abide in Me

“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,”

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,”

“whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”

John 15:4  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Luke 8:15     As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.

Acts 11:23     When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose,

Galatians 2:20     I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Colossians 1:23     if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard,

Hebrews 10:39     But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

1 John 2:24     Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.  And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.

2 John 1:9     Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God.

2 Corinthians 13:5     Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

Complacency, neglect and lacking fruit in our lives is a direct result of us not abiding in Christ.  Coming to the knowledge of salvation and forgiveness of sin through Christ is the beginning of our new life.  This new life is to continually bear much good fruit.  This fruit ought to be seen by others as a testimony to what Christ has done in our life.  Jesus said for us to abide in Him and we will bear fruit.  We can not bear fruit on our own.  It may seem like we can and do but it is clear from scripture that apart from abiding in Christ this fruit is not good.  Paul says we ought to examine and test ourselves.  Examine and test against what?  The only way is to spend time in scripture.  God’s word is able to discern thoughts and intents of our heart and mind.  Apart from His word how can this happen.  Just because we don’t read and have Holy Spirit speak conviction into our heart and mind, does not mean we are not responsible or accountable.  In fact many times we are reminded that being lukewarm is a very bad bad state of living to be in.  What are the fruits of the Spirit.  “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” I am sure there are those who have what they consider all of these but apart from Christ we will never understand them in the proper context.  In His word we understand these and they come alive.  They are whispered into our life and we find them honoring God and not us.  We find it is through His steadfast love we and leading we experience these in a whole new way.  We find our life has purpose beyond that which we can see and touch.  We see this fruit have an impact not only in our lives but in the lives of others as the Holy Spirit leads us.  I am convinced that abiding requires staying in His word and a heart deep desire to humbly serve, honer, follow, and obey.

Planted in God’s word 1

“Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.”

Psalms 1:3
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

Jeremiah 17:8
He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

Ezekiel 17:8
It had been planted on good soil by abundant waters, that it might produce branches and bear fruit and become a noble vine.

Ezekiel 47:12
And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.”

Psalms 128:2
You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.

Genesis 39:3
His master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD caused all that he did to succeed in his hands.

Joshua 1:7-8
Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

A tree once it is planted does not move. It produces the fruit it was intended to produce.  With deep roots it weathers storms and drought.  We are to produce fruit in line with God’s grace, mercy and love.  What does this fruit look like in the life of those who call Him Lord their God? In 2 Peter it says: “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  In Galatians 5:22 Paul said this: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”  In 1 Corinthians 13:4 speaking of love Paul said: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never ends.”  Be a tree planted firmly in God’s promises humbly producing fruit that that honors and glorifies Him alone.
