Matthew 14:1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus, and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given. He sent and had John beheaded in the prison, and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.

In these 12 verses, we have quite a few people who made choices.

Herod the subordinate ruler over Galilee, married to his brother’s wife, feared the people, imprisoned John the Baptist, celebrated his birthday with many guests, made a foolish promise, and though seemingly sorry he ordered the beheading of John the Baptist and had it brought on a platter and given to his wife’s daughter.

Herodias the illegitimate wife of Herod, a mother, gave instruction to her daughter to ask for the head of John the Baptist and was given John’s head on a platter by her daughter.

John the Baptist imprisoned by Herod, told Herod of the evil of marrying his brother’s wife, knew Herod wanted him dead and was beheaded.

Herodias’s daughter who seductively danced before Herod and all who were at his celebration was given an oath from Herod for whatever she might ask, asked her mother what she should ask for, asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter, and gave this platter to her mother.

Those at the birthday celebration for Herod watched Herodias’s dance, heard Herod give the oath, heard the request for John the Baptist’s head, and gave approval for the request.

Disciples of John, took the body of John the baptist away, buried it, and told Jesus of his death.

Imagine you get invited to a birthday celebration of a prominent person and the next thing you know there is a seductive dancer, an oath, a request, and the head of a respected humble righteous person brought in on a platter. Each of these people made choices. All but John the Baptist and his disciples made very bad choices.

For the most part, we do get to choose the actions we take, the places we go, who we spend time with, what we say, what we think, and what we allow ourselves to be taken in with. Every day we get to choose whom we will serve. Will it be to deny and reject the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Will it be for the honor and glory of Jesus Christ, or will it be for selfish desires of our flesh? Think about how you spend your time and who you spend your time with. The best use of our time is in the continual presence of Jesus Christ and in His Word. And, yes it is possible to raise a family, work, do athletics, be at celebrations, shop, and be with others while being in the presence of Jesus Christ and having His Word residing in our minds. It is then that we will know what is right, pure, and honorable. It is then we will discern right vs wrong, good vs bad, truth vs false, love vs anger, peace vs fear, hope vs despair……. Stand firm in Jesus Christ and the things of this world will grow dimmer and dimmer in the light of His glory and grace.

30. “Their feet run to evil”

Matthew 2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: “A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”

Proverbs 27:3-4 A stone is heavy, and sand is weighty, but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.  Wrath is cruel, anger is overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?

Daniel 3:13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in furious rage commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. So they brought these men before the king.

Daniel 3:19  Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with fury, and the expression of his face was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was usually heated.

2 Kings 8:12   And Hazael said, “Why does my lord weep?” He answered, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the people of Israel. You will set on fire their fortresses, and you will kill their young men with the sword and dash in pieces their little ones and rip open their pregnant women.”

Proverbs 28:15   Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a poor people.

Isaiah 59:7   Their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their highways.

We never understand the minds of those who carry out very wicked acts of violence. It is if they have no regard for others or the pain they are causing. Across history, there have been leaders and individuals who give no thought to the lives they are destroying. It is as if their hearts and minds have been incased and filled with hatred, anger, and unyielding fury. There is no compassion or love other than for fulfilling the destructive desire of their deep-rooted anger. Pride, selfishness, and self-worth drive them. No life has meaning other than theirs. Their acts are cruel. There is no thought of God or the power of God, or judgment of God. They are lost and doing things that the most wicked of the lost do.

We can think we are better than these wicked people and if we used human judgment our conclusion is true, but in the eyes of God, all are lost. The eternal judgment for the lost is all the same – eternal punishment and torment forever and ever. Our human thoughts might say this is not fair, but who are we compared to God, the creator, and author of all there is and all there ever will be. God is all-powerful, all-knowing, all-present, and is full of love, mercy, and grace. All of His judgments are right and true. The lost – those who have not trusted in, relied upon, followed, obeyed, and humbly surrendered to His offer of salvation and redemption – all end up lacking and will be cast into eternal hell. There is no partial ground with which to stand. No reliance upon our own good and good things we have done that will make us right before God, only faith and trust in Jesus Christ. There are no degrees of “lostness” in the eyes of God. Being separated from God has the same end for all without Jesus Christ.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

29.z. “An Angel of the Lord”

Matthew 2:13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

Matthew 1:20   But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit

Matthew 2:19    But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

Acts 5:19    But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said,

Acts 10:7    When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him,

Acts 10:22  And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say.”

Acts 12:11    When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

Joseph responded immediately to what the angel said. I don’t know how God uses His angels but uses them He does. He is able to send them to convey a message, open locked doors, or allows them to be seen in some physical form. We know they were created by God and are used by God. The message they convey or the acts they perform are directly from God and for His purpose and will. I certainly do not know how this all works other than to say they are real. We are given examples of acts carried out by angels and the corresponding acts of those who were witnesses to these acts. Joseph took Mary to be his wife, fled to Egypt, and returned from Egypt. apostles were led out of prison, Paul, Peter, Cornelius, Martha, and Mary are examples of angels being used by God for their good. We do well to understand that in all things God is more than able to exceed our needs. He is not limited in any way. Note that these people were followers and believers who trusted in and relied upon Jesus Christ. They were not lukewarm in their belief, trusting, following, or reliance. Their hearts, minds, and souls were fixed on Jesus Christ and to honor and glorify Him continually.

29.y. ““The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.””

Matthew 2:7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

Job 5:12-13    He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.  He catches the wise in their own craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.

Psalms 33:10    The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples.

Proverbs 21:30   No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the LORD.

Lamentations 3:37    Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it?

1 Corinthians 3:19-20   For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,”  and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”

“Those who look for Jesus will see him: those who truly see him will worship him: those who worship him will consecrate their substance to him.” (Spurgeon) Note the difference between Herod and the wise men. The wise men went looking with a sense of urgency but Herod had none. The wise men came to the baby Jesus with gifts and worshipped, Herod had other plans. The plans of man will never alter the plans and purposes of God. Man will try to put a spin on their intents and try to hide it in a cloak of deception but God knows the intents and purpose of their hearts. As hard as a man will try, as conning and deceiving as they can be, and as much worldly and fleshly wisdom they can display, none of it will hinder even the tiniest portion of God’s purpose and plans.

When our heart and soul’s desire is to find Jesus, He will be found. When He is found our hearts and souls will worship Him and no longer claim anything more worthy than Him. Lip service to our searching and worship will leave us void of satisfaction.

29.x. “For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him”

Matthew 2:1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

I read “wise men from the east came to worship him”, “for we saw his star”, and I wonder how long these wise men were looking for the “Star” that pointed to the birth of Christ. We don’t know much about them or how it came about that they were looking for the birth of the king of the Jews. We do know that they believed there was to be born a King of the Jews and that it would be confirmed by a special star indicating both his birth and the place of his birth. The fact they were aware of such an event and believed it and recognized it and then out of an act of faith went to worship Him should not be lost on our reading of this passage. We are told Christ will return and we are to be ready. These wise men were ready and expectantly looking with belief that it would happen. They did not have a day or time given to them on when it would happen, but they did have knowledge of what sign there would be when it did and they were ready. We don’t know the day or time of Christ’s return but scripture gives us signs to indicate His return is soon approaching. “But understand this: In the last days terrible times will come. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good, traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. Turn away from such as these!

Christ’s return should not find us unaware, not looking, not expecting, or not prepared. When our heart, mind, and soul’s deepest desire is to honor and glorify Jesus Christ in all we say, think, and do, it is then we will have expectation and longing for his return – a form of worship birthed out of faith and lives lived with an intentional expectant purpose and meaning.

11.a. “And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth.”

Micah 5:1 Now muster your troops, O daughter of troops; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the judge of Israel on the cheek. But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel,whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of his brothers shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. And he shall be their peace.

John 7:42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”

Matthew 2:6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Luke 2:4-7 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

1 Corinthians 1:27-28 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,

When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet.

From Micah, we read of the importance that was to come from Bethlehem. This prophecy from Micah was quoted in Mathew chapter 2 by the chief priests and scribes. They knew the Messiah would come from Bethlehem. They quoted the verse to Herod when asked: “where the Christ was to be born”. Do you ever wonder what it was that kept them from acknowledging Jesus Christ? Do you ever wonder what it was that kept them from believing in the miracles, healings, and His death and resurrection? These were people who knew scripture and believed in the one true God. And yet, they failed to see the redeemer and savior Son of God. Their lives had the appearance of piety. They proclaimed to know the way too honoring and pleasing God. What was it that kept them deaf and blinded to the Son of God? The fact of the matter is that they trusted more in what they were doing than what Christ did. They trusted in their works as a means of being made right before God. Their hearts, minds, and souls were not surrendered to Jesus Christ but rather given to self-reliance and pride. We aren’t so much different. We trust in self, and much more so when things are going smooth and well in our lives. We lean on our own understanding and make provision in our minds why we are right before God. Our eyes are blind to how far we have followed after things of this world. Our ears are deaf to the Word of God because we choose to live apart from it and allowing it to speak into our hearts. Our hearts, minds, and souls, must be totally surrendered in humble submission before Jesus Christ. It is then we will begin to see that the things of this world are distracting us away from a fruit-filled life of honoring, glorifying, following, obeying, and relying on Jesus Christ.
