22.f. “I could not address you as spiritual people”

1 Corinthians 3:1 But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human?

1 Corinthians 14:20   Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.

Ephesians 4:13-14    until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,  so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

Hebrews 5:12-14    For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,  for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.  But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.

Surely, Paul is telling us that there should be a “spiritual growth” realized in each of us. It is written in Isaiah “For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.” Throughout our lives, we are to be spiritually growing. This growth requires watering and feeding in the Word of God. It does not come through osmosis. Time must be spent both reading it and thinking about it and applying it. The fruit of the Spirit does not grow without being watered and fed. Do you have peace, joy, love, long-suffering, kindness, patience, gentleness, rest, courage, hope….? The world will offer everything under the sun to replace what God will give to the hearts and minds of those who seek and desire to humbly surrender fleshly desires. Spiritual maturity comes with constant watering and feeding in the Word of God with a heart and mind choice to grow and live to honor and glorify Jesus Christ.

22.b. “So that no human being might boast in the presence of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Though we did not have or display worldly wisdom so as to be seen as wise, we have been given and shown Godly wisdom. Though we were weak we have been made strong in Godly strength and power. Though we were not of noble birth we have been given a much higher calling and rebirth through Jesus Christ. When you stop to think about what we were prior to being saved by grace, it is beyond worldly wisdom to describe. We were lost, without hope, powerless, and seduced by what the world has to offer, and then we were not. It is not as though we did something or learned how to change our lot in life to gain this wisdom, power, and new birth (earned it). It was by the grace of God alone. Our hearts were softened, our minds were made to understand, and we were given free will to grab hold of this Good News in and through Jesus Christ. Some may think they deserve this act of grace from God because of how they have lived a good life. If God’s grace could be earned then Christ died in vain. It is not by works we are saved but by grace. Grace alone. If we were given what we deserve we would all be doomed to eternal hell. “For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Grace, God’s Grace alone made way for eternal life.

There is another type of person who knows they do not deserve God’s grace and find it hard to accept God’s grace. Once again they are tied to the thought that some part of them must merit God’s grace (earn it). Come as you are to the throne of grace and believe in Jesus Christ. It is when you come surrendered before Him with empty hands, a scarred soul, battered heart, troubled mind, and without any hope in self that you will find the wisdom of God’s Grace and the mystery of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Still, there is another type who have come surrendered before Him and grabbed hold of His grace through Jesus Christ, and yet they continue to restrict their communion with God because they do not think they deserve His favor. They are right they do not. His favor is not deserved, it is given. Too many times Satan has convinced these saved souls that their past sins make them unworthy of God’s continued grace and blessings. These sins are thrown into their faces day after day by Satan, accusing them of their past and how unworthy they are to even pray to God. Their lives do not have many prayers because they are convinced that they will leave it into God’s hands because they are unworthy to ask of Him. This is a sad state to be in. Lacking communion with our heavenly Father. When God says that your sins are as far as the east is from the west and though your sins are blood-red they will be white as snow and when you have been forgiven, your sins are no more, then they are gone. Satan will tell you how unworthy you are and that these sins are who you are. Reject these thought temptations. You are a child of the King, forgiven of your sins, and as a child, we can go godly before the throne of grace and ask our heavenly Father what is on our heart. Even if we ask wrongly the Holy Spirit will show us rightly. God is able to do more than we ask and much more than we can think.

18.o. “But I chose you and appointed you”

John 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.

Acts 22:14     And he said, ‘The God of our fathers appointed you to know his will, to see the Righteous One and to hear a voice from his mouth;

Romans 9:11-16     though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls—  she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”  As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”  What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means!  For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”  So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

Ephesians 2:10    For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

“We are in Christ, not because we hold Him, but because He holds us.” (Meyer)

Ye have not chosen me – The word here translated “chosen” is that from which is derived the word “elect,” and means the same thing. It is frequently thus translated, Mark 13:20; Matthew 24:22, Matthew 24:24, Matthew 24:31; Colossians 3:12. It refers here, doubtless, to his choosing or electing them to be apostles. He says that it was not because they had chosen him to be their teacher and guide, but because he had designated them to be his apostles. See John 6:70; also Matthew 4:18-22. He thus shows them that his love for them was pure and disinterested; that it commenced when they had no affection for him; that it was not a matter of obligation on his part, and that therefore it placed them under more tender and sacred obligations to be entirely devoted to his service. The same may be said of all who are endowed with talents of any kind, or raised to any office in the church or the state. It is not that they have originated these talents, or laid God under obligation. What they have they owe to his sovereign goodness, and they are bound to devote all to his service. Equally true is this of all Christians. It was not that by nature they were more inclined than others to seek God, or that they had any native goodness to recommend them to him, but it was because he graciously inclined them by his Holy Spirit to seek him; because, “The grace of Christ moved and directed them;” that is, went before them, commenced the work of their personal salvation, and thus God in sovereign mercy chose them as His own. Whatever Christians, then, possess, they owe to God, and by the most tender and sacred ties they are bound to be his followers. (Barnes)

87. The haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low,

1 Samuel 14:6     Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armor, “Come, let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that the LORD will work for us, for nothing can hinder the LORD from saving by many or by few.”

2 Chronicles 14:11    And Asa cried to the LORD his God, “O LORD, there is none like you to help, between the mighty and the weak. Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. O LORD, you are our God; let not man prevail against you.”

Zechariah 4:6    Then he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.

We would do well to stay in God’s word learning more and more about Him and how to humbly serve and honor Him. We don’t need to look very far in the news to see those with prideful, boastful, and non-God honoring comments. You don’t have to read or watch much TV to find those who would knowingly deny God, deny His sovereignty, His son, His Holy Spirit, His warnings and His promises. These people know deep down what they are doing.

I am more worried about those who claim to know and serve God but deny His power, sovereignty, and Holy Spirit. These people live a watered down and diluted christian existence. There is no intentional and active humble service, reliance, or obedience in their superficial walk. This lifestyle knowingly says in their heart, I only need God when I am in trouble, I don’t need Him for everyday stuff, I know enough of His word, I am good enough, I do more than others, …..etc. These people covertly live in the pride of their own power, strength, and doing what seems right in their own eyes. They have become lukewarm in their walk with God because they chose a path of neglect and complacency for His word.

55. I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart.

Deuteronomy 28:15 “But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field. Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Cursed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out.

“The Lord will send on you curses, confusion, and frustration in all that you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and perish quickly on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken me. The Lord will make the pestilence stick to you until he has consumed you off the land that you are entering to take possession of it. The Lord will strike you with wasting disease and with fever, inflammation and fiery heat, and with drought and with blight and with mildew. They shall pursue you until you perish. And the heavens over your head shall be bronze, and the earth under you shall be iron. The Lord will make the rain of your land powder. From heaven dust shall come down on you until you are destroyed.

Leviticus 26:14-46     “But if you will not listen to me and will not do all these commandments,  if you spurn my statutes, and if your soul abhors my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant,  then I will do this to you: I will visit you with panic, with wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make the heart ache. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.  I will set my face against you, and you shall be struck down before your enemies. Those who hate you shall rule over you, and you shall flee when none pursues you.  And if in spite of this you will not listen to me, then I will discipline you again sevenfold for your sins,  and I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze.  And your strength shall be spent in vain, for your land shall not yield its increase, and the trees of the land shall not yield their fruit.  “Then if you walk contrary to me and will not listen to me, I will continue striking you, sevenfold for your sins.

Lamentations 2:17     The LORD has done what he purposed; he has carried out his word, which he commanded long ago; he has thrown down without pity

Daniel 9:11-13    All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, refusing to obey your voice. And the curse and oath that are written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him.  He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us, by bringing upon us a great calamity. For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem.

Malachi 2:2 If you will not listen, if you will not take it to heart to give honor to my name, says the LORD of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart.

Romans 2:8-9     but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.  There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil,

I wonder if we take these curses as something that will happen to really wicked people and does not apply to those who are for the most part “Good”. We tend to put people (others) into one box and we place ourselves in another. Their box is the box of God’s wrath and anger and our box is the box of God’s mercy and grace. My sin is under a blanket of love and theirs is under a thunderstorm of curses.

Complacency and neglect of God’s word lead to drifting away from Him, becoming lukewarm to Him, unable to know what is right and pure, blind to the ways of righteousness, deaf to God’s leading, and allows the way of the world to become a driving influence into your thoughts and actions. The problem is you don’t even see it happening. Like a frog in a pot that is slowing being heated up, it is boiled alive because it was unaware.

I think the worst place for a “believer” to be is in a place of neglect and complacency. Busyness and cares of this life slowly carry them away from walking with God, listening to God, honoring God. It is truly sad to see God’s word being taken for granted and not needed but for special troubling times.

God’s word says “Depart from Me for I never knew you” and “So, because you are lukewarm and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

There is no time like today to commit to being in His word and humbly serving, honoring, loving, following, and obeying God. God’s word is life, hope, purpose, bread to the soul, water to the thirsty, music to the heart, air to the drowning, and understanding and knowledge to the soul.

16. It depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

Exodus 33:19   And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

Romans 9:15-18     For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”  So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.

Psalms 65:4     Blessed is the one you choose and bring near, to dwell in your courts! We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, the holiness of your temple!

Romans 2:4    Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

Numbers 14:18    ‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’

To understand God’s grace requires the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom into God’s love, mercy, compassion, patience, kindness, and goodness. How do we know of all of these attributes of God? By spending time in His word. In His word, we find wisdom and understanding of God’s great love for us. We see His promises of blessings and judgments. We see His power, might, and strength. We see His anger toward sin, unbelief, and complacency. We know of peace in times of uncertainty. We know of His rest when burdens weigh us down. We know of His great wonders. We know His compassion for the lost. A million lifetimes in His word and we will still just scratch the surface of getting to know the depth and width of His love for us.

He chose us to be His children and joint heirs with Christ. He chose us for more than a big moment decision once upon a time. He chose us to live every small moment in the light of the big moment of belief. We are never to become complacent or neglectful of His word. The big moment decision is not the end. It is the beginning of a lifetime of always seeking to honor, glorify, serve, hear, follow and obey.
