38.u. “When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled.”

Genesis 40:1  Some time after this, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and his baker committed an offense against their lord the king of Egypt. And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, and he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison where Joseph was confined. The captain of the guard appointed Joseph to be with them, and he attended them. They continued for some time in custody. And one night they both dreamed—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison—each his own dream, and each dream with its own interpretation. When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were troubled. So he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, “Why are your faces downcast today?” They said to him, “We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.” And Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me.”

In verse 39:1 the captain of the guard was Potiphar. The same person who put Joseph in prison. It is no surprise that Joseph was put in charge of all the prisoners. We should note that Joseph was a man of compassion and service. It did not matter that he was in prison or the position he held. He was a servant leader that cared for those who were under his watch. We can think of many examples of people in our past and present that give a clear vision of leadership without a care in the world for those under their watch or supervision. They think of themselves only. Being a servant leader is not natural in origin. Our natural self relies on self, only thinks of self, and sees others as a means to glorify self. How is God honored at all with this mindset? He is not. How many days do we pass by people who are hurting? How many times do we miss opportunities to be used by God to show compassion, mercy, love, and grace because we are only thinking about ourselves instead of how we might be used by God today for His honor and glory? How many times has the Holy Spirit’s leading been thwarted because our ears are care closed and our eyes blinded by self-interests, self-concerns, and self-worth?

It is easy to see how Joseph was able to be a servant leader while being in charge of Potiphar’s affairs but to maintain this while in prison is another level of commitment and service to God. We all have the opportunity to choose to be a servant to those around us. It is our choice. Make a difference today in the life of someone you know and in the life of someone you don’t. For sure it will not happen if you do not make a choice to do it.  Ask God to open your eye and ears to the hurting souls around you. Ask Him to lead you in ways that honor and glorify Him.

22.m. “Now there are varieties of gifts”

1 Corinthians 12:4  Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

Each of us is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good of God’s plans and purposes.  Wisdom, Knowledge, faith, healing, working of miracles, prophecy, ability to distinguish be spirits, etc…. these are given not earned.

We can’t will them into our being.  They are all for the honor and glory of Jesus Christ.  No gift is better than the other or is to be thought higher than the other.  We don’t get to pick and choose what gift is given to us.  But for certain, we are to use them at the spurring of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives.  These gifts are not to build us up in pride but rather to humble us in thanksgiving, worship, and honor of, for, and to Jesus Christ.  These gifts are not for show, but will surely show the power of God.  We may be given one gift that dominates our being, but at other times the Holy Spirit will come upon us and give us wisdom, faith, etc… for a special moment in time.  We may be given the gift of teaching but need the blessing of wisdom or faith for a time or situation in our life.  God does not withhold these gifts and in these times of our searching, needing, and seeking He will empower us with our desire to rightly use the blessing of one of these gifts.  None of these gifts are to be used outside of the will and purposes of God.  We will never know all the plans and purposes of God for His ways are higher than our ways.  We can know the plans and purposes He has revealed to us in Scripture.  Spending time in His Word will enable the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives according to His plans and purposes.  Be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.  Spend time in His Word. Live to be used by the Holy Spirit for His honor, glory, and praise.

21.k. “Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction,”

Romans 15:4  For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 10:11    Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction,

2 Timothy 3:16-17    All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,  that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 1:20-21    knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.  For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Hebrews 6:11-12   And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end,  so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

The Word of God teaches us that there will be trials, troubles, uncertainties, testings, and things that hurt us physically as well as emotionally.  Why else would scripture tell us that God is our Rock, ever-present in times of trouble, He is our refuge, In Him we find strength, Come to me all who are heavy laden with burdens and I will give you peace, all things work together for good for those called according to His purpose, Stand fast, be strong, etc…..?

For those who trust in, cling to, and rely on Jesus Christ – faith and hope mature.  When we face trials, troubles, and uncertainties, is when scripture seems to have more meaning and where God’s power, might, strength, control, grace, mercy, and love is more relied upon, and where we find hope, peace, and rest for our souls.  Things do not happen by chance.  God is in control.  And, though we do not know why something has happened or how it will end, we find a peace that passes all understanding.  Faith and hope are what sustain us (those who believe in, rely on, trust in, and cling to Jesus Christ), and give us the courage and endurance.

We do not have to look very far into our present world to understand the hearts, minds, and souls of those who do not have faith or hope.  In the absence of faith and hope they fall into despair, hopelessness, worry, fear, confusion, anxiousness, hate, etc….. There is no place for God in their lives and in the absence of God in their lives, there is no refuge, hope, peace, joy, assurance, strength, and confidence.  They are left alone and without hope to face the trials and troubles that are experienced by all of mankind.

There is one God and in Him alone will we find true peace and rest for our hearts, minds, and souls, through faith and hope, in Him alone.

86. “You have too many men.”

Judges 7:1   Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.

But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”

So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” Three hundred of them drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.

The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.” So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.

Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. During that night the Lord said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands. If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.

Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”

His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”

When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.”

Can you imagine the thoughts going through Gideon’s mind?  He has an army of around 32,000 to go up against an army to numerous to count and God says “you have too many men.”  So 22,000 are allowed to leave.  God says “still too many.” In the end, God uses 300 men so that Israel will not boast in their own strength but in the sovereign power, might, and awesome strength of God alone.

How many times do we face that which is overwhelming to us in our own strength and wisdom rather than seeking Jesus and laying our burden at His feet and trusting Him in total reliance?  Far too many times I am sure.  It is never too late to confess we were trusting in our selves.  It is never too late to repent from thinking we can do it on our own.  It is never too late to give it fully into the hands of Jesus.
