25.x. “The LORD detests all the proud of heart.”

2 Corinthians 12:5 I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses— though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Chronicles 26:16   But when he was strong, he grew proud, to his destruction. For he was unfaithful to the LORD his God

2 Chronicles 32:25-26    But Hezekiah did not make return according to the benefit done to him, for his heart was proud. Therefore wrath came upon him

Daniel 5:20    But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was brought down from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him.

Judges 2:3   So now I say, I will not drive them out before you, but they shall become thorns in your sides,

Job 2:7   So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

Luke 13:16    And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?”

Do you ever wonder what turns the heart and soul of a person, proud? What is it that flips a switch in us and makes us think highly of what we have accomplished? We read of Paul who was given a thorn in the flesh and we know that it was given to him, by God, through Satan. The purpose was to keep in from not becoming proud. A proud heart will put self in front of God, think more highly of themselves than they ought, and look at others as less than they are. We are not immune to pride. It can attack us when we least expect it. It can start with simple enough thoughts of accomplishment but then on our own or with a nudge from Satan can turn into more. It is something I did. It is something I can do better than you. It is something reflecting my talent and superiority. It is something I can afford and you can’t. It is something your children have succeeded in. It can be in your intellect, strength, physical appearance. We are not immune to this. So how does a person fall for the bait of pride? When we are lax in studying His Word. When we are living in the presence of this world and not in the presence of God. We live to please ourselves more than God. When we honor and glorify ourselves rather than God. When we are consumed with worldly desires and wants over things of God. Yes, it will happen when we put anything number 1 and God somewhere else down in the list of priorities.

Do we think that any of our abilities came about by the sheer will of our mind or strength? Do we think it is of our doing? Our physical strength, mental intellect, and other abilities all come from God. Some will use these abilities to do some of the most vicious and hardhearted crimes against mankind. We know scripture tells us of times when bad things were done by people to Christians and God used it for good. We seem to have the ability to use our abilities that were given to us for good and what should be used for the single purpose of honoring and glorifying Jesus Christ into or for something bad and contrary to that very purpose. Our ability to think, do, speak, reason, understand, etc…. were all given to us, by God, and how we use them is freely given to us as well. Feed your heart, mind, and soul with God’s Word and pray for the ability to discern the temptation of pride.

Paul, once he understood and knew why God had “given” him this thorn in the flesh he was happy to bear it. He knew it was to keep him from becoming proud. Paul also knew this “Proverbs 11:2 “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” Proverbs 16:5 “The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.” Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” We all ought to be so set against being proud that we seek God continually to expose it so that we can live to give Him “ALL” honor and glory.

5.s. “Are the comforts of God too small for you?”

Job 15:11 Are the comforts of God too small for you, or the word that deals gently with you?

2 Corinthians 1:3-5    Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort  who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.  For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.

Isaiah 51:12    “I, I am he who comforts you; who are you that you are afraid of man who dies, of the son of man who is made like grass,

Psalms 34:2-6    My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad.  Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!  I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.  Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.  This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.

John 14:18     “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

John 14:16     And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,

John 14:26   But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17     Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace,  comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

Asking the question, “Are the comforts of God too small for you?” is good of us to ask of ourselves. Too often we are not content with God supplied comforts or of His word that deals gently with us. Too often we are not content with the “Helper”, “Holy Spirit” because we have closed our hearts and mind to Him. We find that yielding to the leading of the Holy Spirit is lacking in our daily life and wonder what it even means to be lead by the Holy Spirit. One reason we may not hear the leading of the Holy Spirit is that we have not cultivated an ear to hear Him speak into our lives. We can certainly seek and desire to have this leading but being actively listening requires an intentional choice to not only hear but to be willingly going where and doing what the Holy Spirit is leading us. Another reason why we may not hear the leading of the Holy Spirit is that we are not willing to wait for this leading and we move forward in our own strength, power, and wisdom. When we do this we leave no room for God’s will to be done but rather what our will expects to be done. Another reason why we may not hear the leading of the Holy Spirit is that we are complacently walking in sin.

Whatever the reason for walking apart from the leading of the Holy Spirit there will always be the consequences of lacking power, faith, joy, peace, love, generosity, courage, faith, and hope in our life. In this lacking, we will find ourselves being content with worldly things and allowing them to bring meaningless meaning to our lives. “Are the comforts of God too small for you”

5.r. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

Job 14:14 If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my service I would wait, till my renewal should come. You would call, and I would answer you; you would long for the work of your hands. For then you would number my steps; you would not keep watch over my sin: my transgression would be sealed up in a bag, and you would cover over my iniquity.

Ezekiel 37:11-12 Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’  Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people

1 Corinthians 15:42-44   So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable.  It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.  It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.

Acts 26:8    Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?

1 Thessalonians 4:16    For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

Death of our bodies will happen. We will all die and enter into eternity. The physical body we currently have will perish but we will be raised in an imperishable body. God will raise us from the dead and our dry bones will once again be united with our spiritual body and we will walk with Jesus Christ in our new heavenly home. Do you remember when Jesus said “I go to prepare a place for you” “In my Father’s house is many rooms”, in this promise we have hope of eternity? In this promise, we find a reason to live worthy of being called and adopted as children of God.

Job is aware of man’s sin, God’s holiness, man’s death, God’s forgiveness in “till my renewal should come” and “my transgression would be sealed up in a bag, and you would cover over my iniquity”. It is more than just knowing about death and resurrection and sin and forgiveness. It is knowing and living each day with the thought that I could leave this world and enter eternity in a moment. We never know the exact time or day we will die and enter eternity. We live most days like it is far off in the distance and give no more thought about it than for a couple of seconds at best if at all. How would we live if we knew today was our last day in this earthly body? How would we live if we knew today was our last day to honor, glorify, follow, trust, obey, and rely on Jesus Christ? Would you stand before our Savior and hear “well done my good and faithful servant?” Or, would you hear “depart from me I do not know you.”

Our walk with Jesus should be much more than a passing thought each day. It should be the primary and predominant thought throughout each day.

5.g. The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;

Job 11:4 For you say, ‘My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in God’s eyes.’ But oh, that God would speak and open his lips to you, and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom! For he is manifold in understanding. Know then that God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves.

Ezra 9:13     And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, seeing that you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserved

Psalms 103:10     He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.

Psalms 106:43-46     Many times he delivered them, but they were rebellious in their purposes and were brought low through their iniquity.  Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress, when he heard their cry.  For their sake he remembered his covenant, and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love.

Lamentations 3:22    The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;

The word of God contains truths of God. From early on in our journey of being drawn in by God, His Holiness and our sinfulness and need for forgiveness unfold. Our heart is softened and with our mind starting to be opened to the understanding of the mystery of His unfailing and steadfast love for us, we intentionally choose to confess, repent, and fully trust in and rely on, and cling to Jesus Christ. We believe in His sacrifice for our sin and God the Father washing our sin stains away, forever gone. As we read more and more of God’s Word with a heart, mind, and soul-deep desire and seeking, we see our sinful nature and wonder how it is that God does not repay us according to our sins. We see the battle that wages within our soul between sinful self and the new creation, rebirth, being born again self that occurs when we confess, repent, believe, and trust in Jesus Christ. We understand more and more each day how self wants to put self ahead of humbly serving, honoring, glorifying, trusting, following, obeying, and relying on Jesus Christ. We become aware of those things we know we ought to do but don’t and those things we ought not to do but do. In this understanding of our sinful nature, we can only wonder and be awed by the grace, mercy, and love given to us through Jesus Christ. When we commit, (intentionally choose) to seek and desire wisdom and understanding from and through time in His Word, we will continue to mature and grow in our understanding of God’s mercy, grace, and love. Our heart, mind, and soul will continually be moved by this and we will become more and more humble, honoring, serving, and obeying, in our life walk with Jesus Christ.

It is never too late to make this heart, mind, and soul commitment of living each moment of every day in service to our savior Jesus Christ. It is never too late to confess and repent of neglect and complacency.

It is, however, always to late to waste another minute being self-centered, self-serving, self-helping, self-satisfying, and self-seeking. Choosing to live and walk apart from God.

5.f. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way;

Job 10:14 If I sin, you watch me and do not acquit me of my iniquity. If I am guilty, woe to me! If I am in the right, I cannot lift up my head, for I am filled with disgrace and look on my affliction.

Psalms 139:1    O LORD, you have searched me and known me!

Psalms 130:3    If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

Exodus 34:7    keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

Ecclesiastes 7:20   Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

Isaiah 53:6    All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way;

Romans 3:23-24     for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,  and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Throughout scripture, we see men of God who speak of the sin of man. We read of it from Genesis through Revelation. We see the history of man’s sin in light of God’s Holiness. We catch a glimpse of man’s choice to honor and reverence his Creator or not. We see men and women who have intentionally chosen to seek after and live to honor God. We also see those who have intentionally chosen to reject God and only seek to live to please and honor themselves. We read of both God’s steadfast love toward His creation and those who seek to honor, glorify, and worship Him and His anger and wrath towards those who reject Him and live for self-interests, self-gain, self-satisfying, and self-centered reasons.

We live in an age where technological advances have far outstripped our ethics; we have a lot of “power,” but no clear moral benchmarks to aid us in the use of such power. One reason we lack the moral foundation is that we have left the doctrinal foundation of creation and who we are before a Holy and Wise Creator. We seem to lack the desire to search our heart, mind, and soul for that which is not pleasing to Him (sin). We intentionally choose to neglect His word and seek the Holy Spirit to lead us in sin awareness. For the record, neglecting His word and not being aware of sin does not mean we are guiltless. It just means we have turned our back and hardened our hearts to the true things that honor and glorify Jesus Christ.

When we choose to be in His word and seek and desire to do that which is God-honoring and glorifying we will see more and more of our sinful nature and His grace and mercy. We will see more clearly that which honors Him. We will continue to grow and mature in this understanding and knowledge. We will begin to understand love and hope that is found in trusting, obeying, relying on, clinging to, and living for Jesus Christ.

5.e. “For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me.”

Job 9:15  Though I am in the right, I cannot answer him; I must appeal for mercy to my accuser.

1 Kings 8:38-39   whatever prayer, whatever plea is made by any man or by all your people Israel, each knowing the affliction of his own heart and stretching out his hands toward this house,  then hear in heaven your dwelling place and forgive and act and render to each whose heart you know, according to all his ways (for you, you only, know the hearts of all the children of mankind),

1 Corinthians 4:4    For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me.

Jeremiah 31:9  With weeping they shall come, and with pleas for mercy I will lead them back, I will make them walk by brooks of water, in a straight path in which they shall not stumble, for I am a father to Israel,

Daniel 9:3    Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

Daniel 9:18   O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy.

Job examined his life. He has lost his family, his flocks, and his body is being attacked with boils and sores. In this calamity, he examines his life and proclaims “I am in the right”. He is not saying he has done nothing wrong but that he has not done something to deserve all of this happening in his life. He has lived knowing that God is a rewarder of those who seek Him and live humbly before Him. Humanly we can understand what he is saying because from the worldly view it does not seem fair or right. We see what has happened and think what has happened to Job does not seem to be in line with the way he lived. Justice does not seemed to have been awarded fairly.

Does God ever make a mistake? Is He ever unjust? Does He ever do wrong? Is there anything in all of creation that is not under His control?

In our trials and troubles, God may seem far away but He is ever-present. In our trials and troubles, God may seem not in control but He is all-powerful. In our trials and troubles, it may seem God is unaware but He is all-knowing. In trials and troubles, God does not change and has not changed and will not change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Though we do not understand we can trust Him. We can seek His mercy and know that His perfect will is being done, His perfect plans are being carried out, and His purpose will be for the good of those called according to His purpose. In times of chaos, cling to Him. In times of trials and troubles, trust Him. In times of loneliness, know He loves you. In times of sickness, seek the Great Physician.

5.c. “But without faith it is impossible to please Him”

Job 9:1 Then Job answered and said: “Truly I know that it is so: But how can a man be in the right before God? If one wished to contend with him, one could not answer him once in a thousand times. He is wise in heart and mighty in strength —who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?—

Psalms 130:3    If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

Psalms 143:2    Enter not into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you.

Romans 3:20    For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

When you read these verses of men of God you can see the depth of their devotion to and seek Him. They had to be deep in thought about life in the present and death in the future. In their thoughts, they were able to touch the edge of God’s Holiness and Righteousness. In this touch, they were given a glimpse of their sinfulness and asked questions concerning their ability to live and die in such a way to bring honor and glory to God. They rightly asked “Who could stand”, “how can a man be right before God?”, and if a person was able to stand before God and speak “one could not answer him once in a thousand times.” Can you imagine the depth of thought these men were in and coming to a place in this thought where they began to understand it was all in God’s hands and by faith they would try to walk in His ways? Yet, each day they would see time and time again that they failed in this walk. Time and time again they were left with the question of how to be right before God and always falling short.

In God’s perfect plan He brought His law to man to show them of their sin. He showed them the need for forgiveness. He showed them how to be right in His eyes and how to have their sin cleansed. He showed them that is was not the sacrifice that cleansed them but faith in His acceptance of the sacrifice. He showed them it was by faith and not by what they did. Time and time again God did this.

In the fullness of time God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whosoever should believe in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. A once and for all sacrifice that covers all sin if a person believes in the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus Christ, confessing their sin, repenting of their sin, turning away from walking in sin, and trusting in, clinging to, and relying on Jesus Christ.

Think about this, there was a time when man knew of their sin and carried the weight of their sin until they could come and make an acceptable sacrifice. They would be trying every single day to walk in such a way to not sin but would fall short of this goal having to wait until the next time they made a sacrifice.

We are walking in a time of God’s great awesome grace, mercy, and love. Our heart, mind, and soul should be humbled, thankful, and ever seeking to walk in such a way to honor, glorify, follow, trust, and obey.

5.b. “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice.”

Job 8:3 Does God pervert justice? Or does the Almighty pervert the right?

Deuteronomy 32:4   “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.

Ezekiel 18:25    “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel: Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just?

Psalms 89:14     Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.

Daniel 9:14   Therefore the LORD has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, for the LORD our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and we have not obeyed his voice.

Ezekiel 33:20    Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways.”

2 Chronicles 19:7    Now then, let the fear of the LORD be upon you. Be careful what you do, for there is no injustice with the LORD our God, or partiality or taking bribes.”

How many times do we blame God? How many times to we question He is doing the right thing for us? God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all present. How is it we have doubts and questions about the course of things that comes into our life? When things happen, God already knows and is aware of them before they happen. When things happen, God is in control. When things happen God is present. So why is it we doubt and question these events in our lives? Could it be that we don’t believe He is omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent? Is it possible we think He is this active and all-knowing and always present but not necessarily this way in our life?

God is the same yesterday as He is today, all-knowing, all-controlling, all-powerful, and all present in and throughout all of His creation. He has a perfect plan and purpose that will be done. We sometimes get blinded to this because we have taken a vacation from desiring, seeking, and wanting Him in our life. We allow things of this world and worldly desires to blind us from seeing the ever-presence and activity of God. We get blinded to this when we neglect and become complacent in our walk with Him. We get blinded when we do not intentionally choose to live to honor, glorify, worship, follow, trust, and obey Him. We get blinded when we choose to neglect His word and allow it to be active in our thoughts and actions.

God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and ever-present. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We can trust His perfect will, plan, and purpose for our life. We can live victorious no matter what comes our way because we can honor God, by faith, trusting in Him alone for the benefit of His perfect plans and purposes. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”

4.n. There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Job 2:11 Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to show him sympathy and comfort him. And when they saw him from a distance, they did not recognize him. And they raised their voices and wept, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads toward heaven. And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great.

Proverbs 17:17     A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 18:24    A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Job 6:14     “He who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

Job had recently lost all of his flocks and all of his children. Now Satan’s attack is physically upon him. When his friends heard of what had happened to Job they came to him and for 7 days they spoke nothing to him for he was suffering greatly. It is nice to have friends who care about you. Who visit you in your time of trial. Who comes to, in some way, comfort you and give you support. Having a comforting friend around in a time of trials and troubles has a way of sharing the load of this burden together. Their presence encourages and strengthens us, or should I say “can or will” if we are open to receive their comfort. If we reject them, if we turn away from them, if we close our eyes and ears to their help we will not experience the comfort, strength, and encouragement they offer. It is as if we choose to go it alone. I am not sure if it is out of pride, shame, or some other reason but whatever the reason, some can reject the very comfort their soul and mind are searching for.

Jesus Christ said that after His death and resurrection He would go to His father and send the Holy Spirit (the Comforter) to lead us into all truth, to teach, lead, encourage, strengthen, and comfort us. Still, it falls upon us to seek, desire, and be open to these from the Holy Spirit. If our heart is hardened and our mind turned away and our soul standing firm in self-centered self-reliance the working of the Holy Spirit in our life is void. We do well to confess our hardened ways and seek/desire the Holy Spirit to fill us from the inside out, softening us to the point of being able to hear, trust, and obey the whispers of truth, leading, encouragement, strength, courage, and comfort.

4.m. I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the LORD, who does all these things.

Job 1:13-22 Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, and there came a messenger to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “The Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”

In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.

Genesis 3:19    By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Psalms 49:17     For when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not go down after him.

Ecclesiastes 5:15     As he came from his mother’s womb he shall go again, naked as he came, and shall take nothing for his toil that he may carry away in his hand.

Ecclesiastes 12:7    and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

1 Timothy 6:7    for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.

Lamentations 3:38    Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come?

Isaiah 45:7    I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the LORD, who does all these things.

When we limit God’s omnipotence we can only end up, as Kushner did when he wrote: “When bad things happen to good people”. Kushner addresses the conundrum of why, if the universe was created and is governed by a God who is of good and loving nature, there is nonetheless so much suffering and pain in it – essentially, the evidential problem of evil. Kushner seeks to offer comfort to grieving people. His answer to the philosophical problem is that God does his best and is with people in their suffering, but is not fully able to prevent it.

This book was on the Best Seller list for many months. Why was it on the best sellers list? Because when we limit God’s omnipotence, “He could not prevent it”, somehow we can accept what has happened. God loves me and wanted to prevent this tragedy but was unable to stop it from happening. Think about this for a second. God the creator of everything out of nothing(Omnipotent) and who is every present everywhere (Omnipresent) is somehow not omnipotent in what transpires within His creation.

Who can say what is right or wrong, or good or bad with what God purposes and plans? Who can adequately explain the workings of God? God’s word says He loves me unconditionally and that he can do more than I ask and much more than I can imagine. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son” “He will never leave you or forsake you” “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways”

Belief in God and salvation through Jesus Christ His Son is clinging to, relying on, and trusting in Him alone no matter what happens. His ways and will are perfect and even if I do not understand them I can trust Him.

Everything in this world is in the hands of the eternal creator. We do have temporary care of what God gives us and at the same time, we must be willing to give it up for His plans and purposes of which will may not fully understand but can fully trust. Job said it well “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
