32.v. “A sower went out to sow”

Matthew 13:1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.”

This scripture has much meaning and application. God’s Word, the Seed, proclaimed by a person will not always have a salvation result in its hearers. To some the Word of God passes them by for their heart is closed to things of God. When they hear His Word it has no meaning, no application, and no purpose. Though the person may be standing right in front of the proclaimer of God’s Word it is as if nothing is heard for they are stone deaf to it. We should not be shocked that this occurs no matter how eloquent and persuasive our speech for we were much like them until our ears were opened and our hearts softened to things of God. I have no idea how a person’s heart can be so stone-hard and their rejection of God’s Word so firm. The aspects of birds devouring, stony ground, and being choked out by thorns are pictures of how the Word of God has no effect or little to no effect or no lasting effect in the life of the hearer.

If no seed is planted how will anything ever grow? This is very clear and understandable. The results of growth after planting are surely not known at the time of planting. We must never look upon a person and make judgment on the type of soil their heart and mind. Plant we must. God’s Word is powerful and is able to produce a bountiful harvest in the most unlikely of the hearts of people.

9.a. Hear, you peoples, all of you; pay attention, O earth, and all that is in it

Joel 1:2 Hear this, you elders; give ear, all inhabitants of the land! Has such a thing happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers? Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation.

Psalms 49:1    Hear this, all peoples! Give ear, all inhabitants of the world,

Isaiah 34:1    Draw near, O nations, to hear, and give attention, O peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that fills it; the world, and all that comes from it.

Jeremiah 5:21    “Hear this, O foolish and senseless people, who have eyes, but see not, who have ears, but hear not.

Micah 1:2    Hear, you peoples, all of you; pay attention, O earth, and all that is in it, and let the Lord GOD be a witness against you, the Lord from his holy temple.

Matthew 13:9    He who has ears, let him hear.”

Psalms 50:1    The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.

Isaiah 1:2    Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the LORD has spoken: “Children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me.

Have you ever tried to make a point to someone who did not want to listen to what you were telling them? You start by reasoning and logically speak about what you know is to be true. However, no matter what you say they have determined what you are telling them does not apply to them or they are different or it is foolishness. Their mind is made up and you might as well be speaking to a rock. Such it is with the very Word of God to those who harden their hearts against it. God’s Word can bring hope, faith, courage, rest, refuge, power, joy, purpose, focus, and love if the hearer would be open to hear it speak into their heart, mind, and soul. God calls out through His prophets and His Word, “Listen”, “Hear This”, “Give Attention”, “Pay Attention”, and “Give Ear”. To what is God asking His creation to give ear too? This can be summed up in John 3:16-21 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

He calls out to each person “Come onto me” “Cast your cares upon Me” “Receive redemption and salvation through My Son and spend eternity with me” and yet deaf ears are turned toward His invitation. God warns each person that rejection of His Son will result in eternal torment for eternity and yet deaf ears are turned toward Him.

How many times do we go through our day with deaf ears turned on? How many times do we listen more to what the world has to say and offer rather than seeking and desiring God’s Word speaking into our life for each moment of every day?

6.d. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says

Revelation 2:18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze. “‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works. But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden. Only hold fast what you have until I come. The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. And I will give him the morning star. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

What defines a good church? One might include a definition with ministry to others, loyalty, love, patience, faith, and maturity. These would all be good for someone to say about a church corporately and as an individual within that church. The church is made up of individual people who have individual faith in Christ and to hear that corporately they are living out their faith in Jesus Christ in a way that honors Him is a testimony to their individual intentional choice(s). Thyatira was such a church but some had allowed false teaching to pull them into sexual immorality. Some had tolerated a false teacher and self-proclaimed prophetess. In this toleration, they were seduced into following her. Jesus declares they were given time to repent but they chose not too.

Do you ever wonder what each of us might be tolerating in our lives and walk with Jesus Christ? Do you ever wonder if you might be disregarding warnings from the Holy Spirit? Do you ever wonder if you have shut your ears to hear those whispers of repent, turn away, and confess? Do you ever wonder if your eyes have been blinded by cultural tolerances? Do you ever wonder if you have stepped over the line and don’t know it?

Each of us will do well to seek and desire to honor Jesus Christ. David put it like this; “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” When our heart’s desire is to be faithful and Jesus honoring, our ears and eyes being open to hear and see both what we should do and what we should not. Listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to your heart, mind, and soul.

6.b. Though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

revelation 2:8 “And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: ‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life. “‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’

Habakkuk 2:3   For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

Matthew 10:22     And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

Matthew 10:28    And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Luke 12:4-7     And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.  But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

The Church of Smyrna was located within a city that worshipped the emperor and second, pagan gods. They were mocked for believing. They were living in poverty for believing. They suffered for believing. In this prophetic letter, written to them, they were told some of them would suffer prison and other testings/tribulations. Some of these testings/tribulations would lead to or end up in the death of the believer. “Do not fear what you are about to suffer” are the words of Jesus Christ to them.

Do we suffer at all for our beliefs? Are we persecuted for our belief? I really don’t think we are. In fact, we may just be on the other side of this altogether, where we are blessed beyond all measure. Where suffering and persecution are put aside and God’s protection against these types of trials keeps them away. What kind of a believer would we be if this life of blessings was removed and suffering, trials, persecution, and tribulations were allowed into our life? Would we stand firm? Would we cling to, rely on, and trust in Jesus Christ. The Church of Smyrna was not warned about anything related to their conduct and lives as believers, their walk was firm. Their belief was firm. Their trust in Jesus Christ was firm. Their hope was firm. They were encouraged to stand firm and not be fearful of what was coming. It is one thing to stand firm when you live in times of blessings and altogether different when living in a time of persecution, trials, suffering, poverty, and tribulation. We would do well to learn to cast all worldly trusts aside and walk in humble service to Jesus Christ, with our eyes focused on Him not what the world has to offer.
