Esther 6:1 On that night the king could not sleep. And he gave orders to bring the book of memorable deeds, the chronicles, and they were read before the king.
Here is a Persian King who wakes in the night and asked for the book of memorable deeds to be read. This may seem insignificant but I am intrigued by this. I wonder what we do when we wake at night. Do we read or listen to God’s word – His memorable deeds, promises, purpose, grace, mercy, and love? What is it we turn to on restless nights where sleep abandons us?
We have many distractions that all jump out at us – internet, TV, cable, sports, news………… These can all fill the sleepless void but the problem is that we had a choice to give time to the distraction and by doing so an opportunity to read and be awed by memorable deeds of God was lost. An opportunity to hear the whispers of God’s power, might, strength, grace, mercy, promises, and purpose were lost. We certainly get to choose what we do with our time and where we allow our thoughts and desires to take us. The next time you experience a sleepless night try giving that time to learning more of the memorable deeds of Jesus Christ. The distractions of this world’s influence do not need to capture sleeplessness. Give this time, choose this time, and relish this time to know more of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
