30.g. ” But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

 

Matthew 4:1  Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

 John 14:30   I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me,

 Hebrews 2:18   For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

 Hebrews 4:15-16   For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

 Psalms 143:10   Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground!

 Isaiah 48:16-17    Draw near to me, hear this: from the beginning I have not spoken in secret, from the time it came to be I have been there.” And now the Lord GOD has sent me, and his Spirit.  Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.

 Galatians 5:16    But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

There is no way anyone can fulfill the lust of the flesh as they walk in the Spirit. The two simply don’t go together. The Holy Spirit doesn’t move in us to gratify our fallen desires and passions, but to teach us about Jesus and to guide us in the path of Jesus. This is the key to righteous living – walking in the Spirit, not trying to live with desires for the fleshly and Spirit.  We try to do this, don’t we?  We have certain areas of fleshly and worldly desires that we secretly tuck away into corners of our minds.  We seek to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in what we deem appropriate and do not expose these secret passions, vises, addictions, pleasures, or wants and we can also hide, greed, hate, envy, fear, anger, or pride.  We don’t allow the Holy Spirit’s quiet whispers to penetrate our minds in these areas.  For some reason, we hang on to them but deny that we are. And then, there is Satan ready to tempt us with the very things we think we have control over. We may say that is just who I am or how I was raised or some other way to justify allowing them space in our lives.  There is no middle ground where we can stand firm. There is no possible way to be open to being led by the Holy Spirit and try to keep areas of our lives unyielded to the very leading that will draw us closer to a life that honors and glorifies Jesus Christ in all we say think and do.  

25.a. “Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them.”

 

1 John 4:4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them.

 John 12:31    Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out.

 Ephesians 2:2  in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—

 1 John 5:19    We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

The child of God need not fear the spirit of Satan, even though they should be warned of it, because they have the indwelling Spirit of God. That indwelling Spirit is greater than he who is in the world – Satan and all of his allies. We have  a resource for victory, the vital presence of the indwelling Jesus, which makes victory always possible – if we will rely on He who is in you instead of relying on ourselves. This understanding gives us courage for the battle each day and great confidence in the power of the Holy Spirit. For those walking in this truth, victory is assured – they have overcome them. It is a positive statement, not a wishful hope. We have many spiritual enemies, but not one of them is greater than Jesus who lives in us. Those who are of the world are evident because they speak as of the world; the influence of the world is evident in their speech. As Jesus said, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 

We are given discernment, through His Word to know truth and lies, good and bad, holy and evil, children of God and those of this world being led and influenced by Satan the workers of evil intent and selfish gain. Do not be discouraged by the discernment and abundance of ungodliness in the world.  Be thankful for the ability to understand it and the grace that has opened your heart, soul, and mind to it. God’s work in us is not done and the lost still need to be told of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

18.m. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you”

John 14:27  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

 Isaiah 32:15-17     until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.  Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness abide in the fruitful field.  And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.

 Romans 8:6    For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

 Philippians 4:7   And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

The peace this world has to offer is often based on deliberate blind and deafness, half-truths and lies, and a host of other shiny bright distractions or false alternatives. The peace which the world offers us is the peace of escape, the peace which comes from the avoidance of trouble and from refusing to face things.” (Barclay) Jesus offers a better peace, a real peace, a peace that passes all understanding. 

When Jesus is our refuge, hope, rock, courage, and strength we find peace.  This does not mean freedom from trouble but rather Peace of Mind.  We are definitely living in troubling times.  Good is called bad, bad is called good, and lies and half-truths fill media news.  Fear is being sold at every opportunity and the problem is that way too many Christians are buying it, cowering to it, and even proclaiming it.  Love, faith, hope, and trust in Jesus Christ casts out all fear.  The arrows of fear never strike.  The arrows of fear pass us by as we stand on the Rock of our salvation.  David said; “You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place— the Most High, who is my refuge”

“Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid”

Peace comes at a price.  That price is total surrender to the author and finisher, alpha and omega, creator, and all-powerful heavenly Father.  Too often we think that the more we are in control the better it will be, the more peace we will find.  Only when we surrender all we have and all we are to Jesus Christ will we find the peace that passes all understanding.
