37. The Lord did not listen to your voice or give ear to you.

Deuteronomy 1:34 “And the Lord heard your words and was angered, and he swore, Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it, and to him and to his children I will give the land on which he has trodden, because he has wholly followed the Lord!’ Even with me the Lord was angry on your account and said, ‘You also shall not go in there. Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall enter. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. And as for your little ones, who you said would become a prey, and your children, who today have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in there. And to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. But as for you, turn, and journey into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea.’

“Then you answered me, We have sinned against the Lord. We ourselves will go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.’ And every one of you fastened on his weapons of war and thought it easy to go up into the hill country. And the Lord said to me, Say to them, Do not go up or fight, for I am not in your midst, lest you be defeated before your enemies.’ So I spoke to you, and you would not listen; but you rebelled against the command of the Lord and presumptuously went up into the hill country. Then the Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you as bees do and beat you down in Seir as far as Hormah. And you returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord did not listen to your voice or give ear to you. So you remained at Kadesh many days, the days that you remained there.

Not doing what the Lord asks of us or doing what the Lord asks us not to do is the same thing. We either do not listen, can’t hear, or don’t care to be close enough to God to hear His voice speak into our lives through His word. The result is “doing what seems right” but it is not of God’s leading.

When we do something with the appearance of “good” we can come up with every excuse in the world as to why what we are doing is honoring God. Is the “good” you are doing a result of being led by God or because you think it seems the right thing to do or because society thinks you should? The question to ask your soul is; am I doing this to honor and glorify God alone, or am I doing this to make myself feel good, get some recognition for doing it, or earn God’s favor by doing it? God already has shown His favor, love, compassion, mercy, and grace through sending His son Jesus to redeem and call us to Himself. There is nothing more we can do but to surrender all of our being, heart, mind, and soul to humbly serve, worship, glorify, follow, obey, and honor to Him.

When we are complacent and neglectful our ears become dull or deaf to hearing God speak into our lives through His word or from others who speak His word into our lives. We seem to gravitate toward this as a natural default when things are going good and only return to seek and desire Him when things are troubling us. This does not honor God and He is not going to be mocked by this thinking. There must be a steadfast repentance and turning away from how we were and how we were thinking. This will never happen apart from gaining knowledge, understanding, and wisdom from His word. Peter said if you are not continuing to grow you are not standing still but rather you are drifting away. There is never a permanent position where we can say we have a full understanding and knowledge of God.

Does your heart ache for the way our culture is heading? Does your heart weep for the way our church body is leaning more and more toward the way of the culture/society? Do you see and hear the way of our society with the eyes and ears of man or God?

Be intentional in reading His word. Be intentional in listening to Him. Be intentional in honoring Him. Be intentional in obeying Him. Be intentional in growing in understanding, wisdom, and knowledge of Him.

25. We must not put Christ to the test

Numbers 14:20 Then the Lord said, “I have pardoned, according to your word. But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord, none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it.

Malachi 3:15    And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’”

Matthew 4:7    Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

1 Corinthians 10:9     We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents,

Hebrews 3:17-18    And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?  And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

Deuteronomy 1:31-35    and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.’  Yet in spite of this word you did not believe the LORD your God,  who went before you in the way to seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.  “And the LORD heard your words and was angered, and he swore,  ‘Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers,

I saw a quote yesterday that said: “You may think you can live fine without Christ, but you can not afford to die without Him.” Tozer had some thoughts on how we become what we love at the expense of following God. “We are all becoming something. We have moved from what we were to what we are, and are now moving to what we will be. Our character is not solid but fluid and always moving toward what we are becoming. The perturbing thought is not that we are becoming, but what we are becoming; not that we are moving but what we are moving toward. We are never moving horizontal, we are either moving ascending or descending. We are either moving toward the worse or the better. Not only are we all in the process of becoming, but we are also becoming what we love, the sum of this love changes, molds, shapes, and transforms us. This Love is prophetic of our future. It tells us what we shall be and predicts accurately our eternal destiny.”

God’s promises mean very little if they are not believed. God’s word will never be active in our life if it is not loved. God’s warnings of complacency and neglect will not lead to repentance if the heart and soul are walking in a different direction away from God and headlong into the way of the world.

Be mindful of your path and direction of your love.

Ask for the ancient paths

Psalms 95:11 Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They shall not enter my rest.”

Numbers 14:23 shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the LORD, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

Hebrews 3:18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

Jeremiah 6:16 Thus says the LORD: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

Hosea 4:4-11 And it shall be like people, like priest; I will punish them for their ways and repay them for their deeds. They shall eat, but not be satisfied; they shall play the whore, but not multiply, because they have forsaken the LORD to cherish whoredom, wine, and new wine, which take away the understanding.

Matthew 11:28-29 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Revelation 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”

The contrast of those who willingly disobey and those who choose to follow Jesus Christ is clear. The line in the sand, as it were, is the choice – either ‘We will not walk in it.’ or “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls” and again in “Come to me,” / “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me“. God promises rest for those who come to Him, ask, and seek to learn from Him. Likewise He promises the opposite for those who choose not to. This is either all in or all out. There is no in between. Be mindful of the choice being made – it has an eternal consequence.

2 Thessalonians 2:16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

2 Thessalonians 3:1 Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you,
But only God who gives growth. We wonder why some or all of what we do seems purposeless and without life meaning and satisfaction. It is time to learn from Him and seek him like given in this scripture “One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life,” Everyday the choice we get to make concerning serving Him is given to us. We get this choice and should we make the right choice we find peace, hope, love, power, courage, strength, comfort, joy and life with fulfilling purpose. If we make the choice to follow self and the world we void all of this. We may find these in short term bursts but they do not last and they certainly do not fulfill. Do you want to see growth in what your purpose is this side of eternity? Seek and desire God. Choose to honor, serve, follow and obey Him. How can we lose sight of what Jesus Christ freely did to redeem us from a path to eternal hell? He allowed Himself to be beaten, whipped, nailed to the cross, mocked, spit upon and stabbed with a spear. He could have stopped any of this happening at just a single word. He chose to redeem. He chose to call to Himself a people who come to Him with desire to humbly serve Him. What manner of people ought we to be in light of the great sacrifice paid? How should we live? Seek and desire Jesus Christ in and through your life. Be kind, generous, loving, giving, humble, hopeful, joyful, and never forgetting the redeeming price that was paid for your salvation. Follow Him fully.
